REFLECTION PAPER
BACKGROUND
When our group was randomly assigned, by chance, three of our members were already working closely together on an intense project in another class. Luckily, they had already had positive relationships and myself and the other new member fit right in. The result was a significant kick-start, and we were able to maintain the momentum through to completion. After struggling to win the first game, we knew that if we each looked out for our own interests and did not collaborate on what was best for the team, we would all go down. The group decided, we would keep score, however, we would still continue to play the way we had been playing.
I volunteered to keep score, and we started to play again. Even though we had decided to not worry about the points, I noticed everyone glancing at the score sheet, interested in their point tally. Along the way, someone joked that they preferred to make a move against the group decision because there were points to be won. We all have competitive sides, and needed to know how we were tracking versus each other. The number of points acquired did not contribute to winning the game, our collective goal, and yet it was clear that creating a measure for individual comparison, no matter how irrelevant to actual contributions, was distracting for the team members and could ultimately cost us the game.
Unfortunately, soon after second game started, we had some bad luck and our island flooded. If we had not encountered the bad luck of cards and had continued to play with the conflicting motivation of individual points, my prediction is that our outcome would have been the same.
