Force Walrus Away From Alaska's Hunters Summary
"Warming Waters, Melting Ice, Force Walrus Away from Alaska's Hunters" by Rachel D’oro explains how global warming is driving away walrus, the Native Alaskan’s main source of food. First due to global warming, walruses are fleeing area’s in search of a better atmosphere with more ice. “Global warming is melting ice off Alaska’s coast. Walrus go where ice is best” (D’oro). Because the ice is melting, and walruses are leaving, this makes Native Alaskan’s rethink what their main source of food should be. Secondly, Ice serves many purposes to the Native Alaskan’s. The loss of ice means they don’t have anything to counter the wind and the rough waters (D’oro). Not only do they lose walrus meat by the lose of ice, but they also lose protection and

Air pollution from PowerPlanet power plants are melting ice caps which destroy arctic animal habitats, which in return is killing the arctic species. Ice caps are sheets of ice that make up polar and sub-polar regions. Now with rising temperatures in the poles the ice caps melt and break off from the main lands. This will keep pushing animals inland, shrinking their habitable zone. WIth the shrinking of arctic animals’ habitat it drives them together which is not good for smaller animals who are prey to dominant species like polar bears. Ice caps can also seclude animals. Instead of you being on the block of ice, suppose it was a cute little arctic fox…

The people most impacted by these harmful effects are those living in the Arctic. These Arctic communities rely on an “informal, subsistence economy” where goods like clothes and food come from hunting and fishing. The retreat of sea ice and climate related changes in the Arctic marine ecosystem “bears implications for subsistence livelihoods” that the Arctic people rely on for both survival and prosperity. It is the responsibility of Canada to support these northern citizens by understanding the problems they face and to enact policy reflective of the Arctic Council’s…

As stated previously, walruses are social mammals and travel in herds. The calves rest on top of the adult females. There also tends to be a larger herd amount on land compared to ice. While resting on ice, it’s easier to enter the water in several directions. However, on land there is only one direction to go to enter the sea. The distance to the water is also further compared to ice haulouts, making it harder to escape the stampede. Walruses can be disturbed by natural and non-natural events. Natural events include hunting and predators such as polar bears (Figure 5). Non-natural disturbances include airplanes, vessels, and tourists. Calves are more likely to be killed rather than adults because they are…

For thousands of years polar bears have lived a great life in the North. The Inuit (a tribe) people have lived with them, hunting them occasionally for food or clothing. There was never any fear that the Inuit would over hunt the polar bears because it was dangerous and the weapons available to them were creative. In more recent times, the polar bears have been sought out by hunters, just not the Inuit who live in the North. They have been over hunted by people looking for the big trophy. Eventually in the 1970s the over hunting was brought under control by the International Agreement on the conservation of polar bears and their habitat. Polar bear number once again began to grow because of this.…

The human impact on today’s enlivenment for polar bears isn’t the best. Polar bears are finding harder to service with ice melting earlier in the spring and refreezing later in the fall. With larger oil companies moving closer into the arctic it is affecting the bears even more. Already having to deal with clement change and ice melting faster, big oil has moved in and poring toxins in to the environment. With the working of the oil rigs, oil is spilling out into the water poising the polar bears food sources. Other sea life is ingesting the oil then the polar bear eats the food and then is poising themselves. Polar bears with low health are not able to mate and have cubs, if the bears do have cubs the cubs die at an early age do to the lack…

Climate change in the Tundra will cause very alarming problems that hold the potential to affect the present generation and those to come. Climate change is an adjustment of global or regional weather patterns. The Tundra has a frigid climate, frozen soil, and animals such as lemmings and polar bears. Additionally, there are flowers and grasses throughout the land. Nutrients for such plants come from dead and decomposing biological matter. Essentially all the precipitation is in the form of snow due to the average temperature of approximately 7.75°F (Google.com). Despite efforts to reduce carbon emissions, the permafrost is melting at startling rates due to human interference.…

Poe's story "The Premature Burial" reflect the terror that the characters suffer from and lead them to be isolated from the society. The use of the single effect in Poe's short stories supports the structure and the actions in the story. The use of the words " premature, horror, interments, buried while alive, entombment" and others support the overall atmosphere, which is full of fear and terror from being not dead yet but buried. Researchers found evidence of rapidly melting ice where walruses feed. The development of the ice is significant because walruses use sea ice as a resting platform, for pups and their mothers (Butler). If walruses cannot adapt to caring for their young without sea ice the population will plummet. In order for seals to cope with global warming, they need to shift their territories to suitable ice conditions (Ringed Seals and Climate Change). Seals desire to breed is altered by warmer temperature. The seals are not having as much offspring because the average pup survival rate is…
