The gods seem to be aware of her emotional state and sometimes even keep information from her to avoid panic; a good example of this is when Eurycleia was washing the feet of Odysseus and Eurycleia discovers from a scar it is Odysseus and wanted desperately to tell Penelope it was her husband right there but “she could not catch the glance, she took no heed, Athena turned her direction elsewhere” (Homer 19.540). Penelope’s life is an interesting example of more Greek values that are fidelity and patience. The fact that Athena did not want Penelope to know also shows an important quality of the gods, that they are able to see the bigger picture, and have everything well planned…

He used the term “mythology” to compare similarities in cultures by giving an example of the Greeks. We perceive Greek mythology as just some stories or tales and nothing else. Had we asked a Greek person during Homeric Greece about the mythological tales they told their children to explain where we come from, they’d probably say they don’t now what we are talking about because, to them, the mythological stories were fact.…

Aphrodite’s divine willingness to force love between Sappho and her lover illustrates the repetition within Sappho’s love life. As Sappho continues to affiliate herself with an unrequited love, her perception of love remains skewed because of the lack of affection reciprocated by her lover; moreover, Aphrodite fuels Sappho’s knowledge, or lack thereof, of love through her multiple returns to satisfy the mortal’s desires. The goddess’s involvement in the love life of Sappho prevents the mortal from acting through free will; rather, the fate of Sappho’s relationship lies in Olympus because of Sappho’s confidence that the gods are capable of granting her every wish. Although this relationship has proved a reliable source in Sappho’s moments of…

This only proved Hera’s intelligence when she was schemed her attacks against these mortal women.Subconsciously, she always knew of Zeus’ deceptiveness, but she never let him know of her cleverness. Dan Nardo, author of Greek Mythology Online, explains, “Hera often showed she was capable of taking care of herself”(Nardo 97). Most of the time Zeus was not with Hera and it shows how independent and strong she truly was. No matter what was thrown at her, Hera never let immortality get in her way of being the beautiful goddess that she…

She is in constant support of both Odysseus and Telemachus. whenever Odysseus or Telemachus prays to the gods/ Athena their prayers are almost immediately answered and they always end up getting what they want. In the beginning of chapter 5 Athena expresses her support of Odysseus quest by “telling the many sufferings of Odysseus, for she pitied him. Homer 65” She wants the best for Odysseus and there are clear implications of one-sided romance as she continues to nurture him, especially when she takes action in book III to “Shed sweet sleep upon his eyes, closed his eye-lids and made him loose all memory of his sorrows. Athena, the grey-eyed goddess of wisdom and battle, has a soft spot for Odysseus and Telemachos. The action begins with a meeting of the gods, where Athena makes a plea on behalf of Odysseus, asking her father, "Why, Zeus, are you now so harsh with him?" (I, 62). This action, paired with another intervention into a meeting of the gods, shows Athena's initiative and nerve, two traits which would have been greatly admired by Homer's audience. Athena also shows cleverness and ingenuity when she disguises herself and others on several occasions: The goddess first appears as Mentes, and then later as Mentor, Telemachos himself, Penelope's sister, a friend of Nausikaa's, and various servants. Not only is she a master of disguises, but Athena has an incredible sense of when it is necessary to appear as someone else in order to achieve her goals. While possibly just a product of Athena's goddess status, her ability to view the "big picture" is quite a highly regarded trait. Athena also has the virtue of restraint which she demonstrates when she does not take part in the final battle between Odysseus and Telemachos and the suitors.…

Another important Ancient Greek value is the rare presence of faithful women. Through The Odyssey, women are mostly portrayed as unfaithful, deceitful, and devious. Therefore, those who are faithful and honest are greatly respected. For instance, even though everyone believes that Odysseus is dead, Penelope still possesses her true love and devotion to Odysseus. When Penelope repeatedly rejects the marriage proposals from many wealthy men, she demonstrates that she respects this Ancient Greek value. Because of that, she is finally rewarded with happiness when Odysseus returns. Conversely, women who are untrustworthy and underhanded eventually have to face fatal…
