Foreshadowing In A Rose For Emily
The Use of Foreshadowing in A Rose For Emily The short story A Rose for Emily written by William Faulkner takes place in a small southern town in the period of time after the Civil War known as reconstruction. The main protagonist, Miss Emily, seems to be a closed off woman who speaks to few in the town after her father passes. The events that happen after her father’s death helped foreshadow the ending and allowed me to quickly guess the plot line.
The first hint of foreshadowing for me was when Miss Emily took up with Homer Barron and the townsfolk kept referring to her as “poor Emily”(85). Emily already seems to be on edge, bitter, and annoyed with the townsfolk, calling her “poor Emily” is not going to end well. She seems the type to

William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is a short story based on the acts of Emily Grierson, before her death. Through the use of foreshadowing, Faulkner creates a veil of mystery that and draws the reader in, keeping them guessing until the very end. The first instance in which Faulkner utilizes foreshadowing is when he writes, "Dammit, sir...will you accuse a lady to her face of smelling bad?" (Faulkner). While it may seem as though it is unnecessary information, the pointing out of the odor in Emily’s house is later concluded to be an effect of Homer’s death. Another example of foreshadowing is when Emily is going to the druggist and insists on purchasing the strongest poison they have to offer, "I want some poison...I want the best you…

In William Faulkner “A Rose for Emily’’ we think about who is Emily, what does the rose symbolizes, and most of all who is the narrator. Throughout most of Faulkner’s story for me as a reader I wanted to figure that out. In the beginning Emily is presented as a woman who grew up wealthy never having to worry about anything. But over time things changed after her father’s death. Later on, Emily never really takes notice of the present.…

“I want the best you have... I want arsenic.” Emily was purchasing rat poison. Did she really have rats? Or did she poison her husband Homer Barron? William Faulkner used a few ciphers in “A Rose for Emily” to get his readers to explore their imagination. It is an extremely suspenseful, on the edge of your seat, story with a shocking ending. It is a short story about an old women who loses her father and eventually her husband; she is the talk of the town and after she dies, everyone realizes exactly how insane she was. Faulkner uses many symbols that have meanings of their own and also for something else.…

The symbolism is strong throughout the written story, beginning with Miss Emily herself as the reader sees her refuse “to submit to, or to concede, the inevitability of change” (Skinner). The narrator is thought by some to exact a measure of revenge by telling the tale and attempting to relieve the grief produced by Homer Barron 's rejection of Miss Emily, making the narrator himself, the protagonist in the story (Dilworth). The most interesting part of the story is in the end when Homer Barron’s murder and Miss Emily’s necrophilia are discovered. Unfortunately, the feeling of surprise, revulsion, and that “ah-ha! I knew it all along!” one gets reading the story is not carried into the movie. It is only in the written version of the story that the mixed chronology allows for the strong use of foreshadowing to give clues of the murder of Homer Barron.…

In A Rose for Emily, William Faulkner tells the story of Miss Emily Grierson, who isolated herself from the people of Jefferson, a former Civil War battleground and the town she called home. From the outside, Emily appears as a normal southern belle living in the bitter times of the Reconstruction era; although her vindictive neighbors tend to think otherwise of her presence. Emily’s rough past with her controlling father lead to a pattern of silent yet deceitful behaviors. Following her father’s death, she denies his passing, holding onto his dead body for three days and initiating the spiral of increasingly deranged actions Emily takes. Faulkner reveals a metaphorical relation to the time of Reconstruction in the South through the portrayal of Emily’s resistance to the changes happening around…

One instance in the narrator explains that shortly after Ms. Emily’s sweetheart left her, there was an awful smell. It smelled so bad that a judge was contacted regarding what to do. Instead of confronting Ms. Emily, men snuck into her yard and spread lime to cover up the smell. At this point, in the story, I knew that her sweetheart was dead. Further into the story, more foreshadowing occurs when Ms. Emily purchases Arsenic, but refuses to identify her purpose for the poison.…

Symbolism means for me objects or facts in the story “A Rose for Emily” characters are in this story. Emily was always trying to fine a happy life, and her father was trying to like scare ever guy that come to the house. Symbolisms are meanest in the story as mean objects are giving like the house, rose, Emily hair, and gray hair. A symbolism for me is like family staying together as one chine, as my dear mother told me “family matters more than anything in the world, family going to be here no matter what happened.” She was right I been learning from the best as it was always true.…

A Rose for Emily is a short story written by popular American author William Faulkner, which details the events of Emily Grierson, an aristocratic woman admired by the community. The setting of this story takes place in Mississippi, in the fictional town of Jefferson between the post antebellum period and the late 1920s. William Faulkner’s short story, "A Rose for Emily", follows one of the author’s main themes in many of his later works, i.e. the racial and societal divides that continued in the South after its defeat of the Civil War. One believes, Faulkner, being born and raised in the Deep South writes with a close working knowledge racism, classism and cultural divisions. Faulkner himself was not a racist, although most of his family was. Faulkner after all was raised from birth by a black woman, Caroline Barr (Callie), whom he loved dearly and called mother. "A Rose for Emily" is set in Faulkner’s imaginary town of Jefferson Mississippi, in an even more imaginary county of Yoknapatawpha where many if not most of his literary works, considered Southern literature, are centered. Emily, it seems is a woman who wants to be loved and have a family, but it appears the men in her life are forever leaving, be it by death or choice. Emily has difficulties dealing with this fact of life and handles each situation badly.…

William Faulkner wrote the short story “A Rose for Emily”, set shortly after the Civil War. I believe that Faulkner wrote this story about a woman who wanted to have a family and a normal life. Emily does find a man that she believes that could give her the life that she has been longing for but then finds out that he does not truly want her, which in the end she murders. Faulkner wrote this story by drawing a picture of the life of a girl who was bound inside her house because of her father, and thought she could find a normal life after he died.…
