There was something lingering in the air, a presence. When felt, the roots bursted opened. Green liquid seeped out, and dripped to the ground. When it began to pool upon the sand, stems began to rise, buds began to appear. A forest had emerged from the ground within minutes.…
The wooded area surrounding the park has a mystifying feel with the sun setting and the strange odor of a dank basement coming from its small pond. The air feels sticky and warm this time of the year and the trees blocking the breeze makes it even more muggy than usual. The open and empty field gives me a feeling of isolation and the darkening skies has an ominous look. I can hear the shrieking muffled sounds of animals nearby, but without being able to see what’s beyond the blurry tree line, it’s hard to know if what I’m hearing is wild and aggressive or tame and timid. I can taste the musty fall air on my tongue as the breeze…
Upon arriving at the state park, the beautiful trees of autumn welcome you along with the variety of faces unfamiliar to you, walking around care-free. The trunks of the trees were all sorts of sizes with multitude colors; the trees were particularly brown, like milk chocolate. While some trees were bare, others possessed a thick collection of leaves, fanning out like the mane of a lion. The collection of people walking among the fallen autumn leaves creates an everlasting sound—swish, swish, swish. The faint sound of the lake brushing against the sand murmurs in the distance, inviting you to…
Looking down at my predicament, I saw a steep vertical drop that led into a crystal clear river that flowed between two main opposing canyon slopes. Everything below comprised of layered rocks, cliffs, hills, and valleys, with the occasional hint of green pine trees and plenty of bushes. The air was rich and clear at the same time. A subtle, cool breeze grazed through my thick wolley jacket and reminded me of the potential coldness of mountain weather. The sun brightened at that very moment and heated my cold body. Soon, the sun light spread throughout all of the rocky lands and gave everything a red-orange hue. “Wow what is that!?” my cousin exclaimed. Everyone turned their heads upward. Far into the clear blue sky, a pair of eagles gracefully maneuvered around a puffy white…
As I was walking I saw a strange house that caught my attention, all the windows had thick dark swayed curtains that draped over the solemnis and depression that the had,I could tell the paint had been chipped off the sides of the house from years of wear, after observing the house continued to…
Every book has a certain message it wants to bring to you; whether it’s about greediness, loss, etc. This book, A Walk in the Woods, is about preparation, perseverance, and helping the environment. It’s mostly about the conservation and raising global awareness. It’s about two men who decided to hike the Appalachian Trail and while on it, discovered a lot of things, like the fact that they were both seriously out of shape.…
You feel the cool air warm up around yourself. There is a pleasantness that can only be found in these warm winter days. Birds squawk overhead. In a pack they fly in v’s. You wanted to fly, but the dream fled after you jumped off the deck. Birds gain height, you gained a broken arm. The birds slow and descend onto the small patch of grass to your left. Wildlife is all around you, but the adults don’t seem to notice. Not far ahead, a squirrel shoves acorns into his mouth, climbing up a tree he deposits his cache into a hole. He runs down the tree to start the process again. Nature is a cycle, a loop that won’t…
The lake was surrounded by all kinds of trees: sugar maple tree, camphor tree, etc. At the center of the lake, there were a few huge trunks lied down the peaceful lake. On the trunks, there were some ducks “quack” around as if they were planning to have a sunbath party. Around those the ducks, there were a few birds hovering in the blue sky. The sound of chirping spread and penetrated quickly through the air, leaving the all forest the impression of both tranquility and delightfulness.…
The sun shone vibrantly through the trees and I loved the way it complemented the gold leaves. I started to notice the incline to the top of the hill, it was steady unlike the Adirondacks where you go up and down. When I got to the top I saw a spectacular view of the surrounding neighborhoods and way in the distance I saw the buildings of Rochester. As I stood there I admired the pure beauty that lies so close to home. It is hard to believe that a wilderness like this one could be surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Being higher up and in an open space I could really appreciate the mixture of golds, oranges and yellows it was different than being on regular ground level. I thought to myself ‘’I should do this more often, it’s peaceful and healthy.’’ I felt a certain peace with in me while I’m in the woods, suddenly my phone vibration broke my train of thought. It was my stepmom texting me to see if everything was okay, I replied yes and I’d be back at the trailhead in a short time. The leaves snapped and cracked under my feet on the way back and the crisp fall air made the not yet fallen leaves dance in the trees, it was getting later in the day. I was three quarters through the loop so I was still fine,I wasn’t…
Great green and yellow grasshoppers are everywhere in the tall grass, popping up like corn to sting the flesh, and tortoises crawl about on the red earth, going nowhere in plenty of time. Loneliness is an aspect of the land. All things in the plain are isolated; there is no confusion of objects in the eye, but one hill or one tree or one man. To look upon that landscape in the early morning, with the sun at your back, is to lose the sense of proportion. Your imagination comes to life, and this, you think, is where Creation was begun.(The Way to Rainy Mountain, "Introduction," p. 5) In your own words, briefly explain what the narrator is seeing and feeling:…
It was midsummer so it was warm outside. We are traveling through mountainous woods. Up top a ridge, we could see nothing besides the sea of evergreens that extended out off into the horizon. The red colors of the leaves reminded me of the maple trees that used to be outside of my house. I…
A hunter is a provider. This skill that a person learns can save their family, or themselves in a time of need. Providing nourishment, protection, intelligence of the wild is what they are good at. To be a hunter is to be smart, stealthy, patient and merciful. Hunters observe, wait, shoot to kill and provide.…
I look to my left and see the sun slowing coming over the horizon. I watch as it fades from a dark purple to a dull red and I realize that soon it will be blazing yellow. It alone will be my guide as I venture solemnly into the woods. The forest is bustling with life as I walk through the labyrinth of trees skyscraper high. I walk across the dense…
1. The forest had trees that were tress the size of skyspapers. Raindrops were falling slightly. All you can see is trees full of monkeys. Leaves all draped in your faces with every step.…
There was nothing but trees. The sun was shining, slicing through the branches and leaves. It lightly hit and reflected onto the ground, creating small yellow circles that illuminated sticks and small stones. What seemed to be white particles floated through the air and were only visible within the rays of sun. They fell gently and slowly towards the soil-based ground. The river I sat in front of moved rapidly. The shallow water crashed into pebbles that were spread out. Across the river were more trees. As I looked further ahead, the trees began to fade and disintegrate into the mist.…
