Fork Union Military Academy: A Short Story
On a brisk January morning in 2014, a boy in the eighth grade stepped onto the campus of Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA); and little did he know it, but he was about to embark on an experience that would change his life. Walking through the cracked façade of the pea-green middle school academic building, anxiety and fear raced through his mind. Prior to his transfer to FUMA he attended Fluvanna County Public Schools, and things were going poorly. The report cards sent to his parents showcased his substandard performance. He had a poor work ethic, and worst off, he was indifferent to the whole ordeal; and so, later that year, his parents enrolled him in Fork Union Military Academy. That young boy was me, and as luck would have it, attending …show more content…
However, this welcome was quickly followed up by his addressing what I did wrong. “I know it’s your first day, so you’re not in trouble, but for future reference you need to make sure that you are wearing your uniform correctly with your shirttail tucked in; and when you enter an officer’s office, you must salute and report in.” I was shocked! I had just walked in the door and already he was making sure that I did everything correctly, right down to the smallest details. Never in any other school that I had attended in the past had anyone seemed to care that much about what I did, and it was this kind of behavior from the rest of the faculty and many of my peers prompted me to raise my standards to that of a FUMA cadet. In such a short amount of time I had already formed close bonds with the faculty and my fellow cadets, and I didn’t want to let them down. So, I rose to meet those new standards that were set for me to the best of my ability. Fork Union Military Academy instills the core values of respect, integrity, faith, character, and discipline. Because of these core values and the support, I received from my parents and my school, I have become the man I am

You really don’t know who we are?” Jason shrugged helplessly. “It’s worse than that. I don’t know who I am.” The bus dropped them in front of a big red stucco complex like a museum, just sitting in the middle of nowhere. Maybe that’s what it was: the National Museum of Nowhere, Jason thought. A cold wind blew across the desert. Jason hadn’t paid much attention to what he was wearing, but it wasn’t nearly warm enough: jeans and sneakers, a purple T-shirt, and a thin black windbreaker. “So, a crash course for the amnesiac,” Leo said, in a helpful tone that made Jason think this was not going to be helpful. “We go to the ‘Wilderness School’”—Leo made air quotes with his fingers. “Which means we’re ‘bad kids.’ Your family, or the court, or whoever, decided you were too much trouble, so they shipped you off to this lovely prison—sorry, ‘boarding school’—in Armpit, Nevada, where you learn valuable nature skills like running ten miles a day through the cacti and weaving daisies into hats! And for a special treat we go on ‘educational’ field trips with Coach Hedge, who keeps order with a baseball bat. Is it all coming back to you now?” “No.” Jason glanced apprehensively at the other kids: maybe twenty guys, half that many girls. None of them looked like hardened criminals, but he wondered what they’d all done to get sentenced to a school for delinquents, and he wondered why he belonged with them. Leo rolled his eyes. “You’re really gonna play this out,…

I, Jaelin Carter, am writing to you, Hetal Patel, to prove to you why I deserve to continue my college career here at Robert Morris University. Rightfully so, should I have been on academic probation seeing as though I did not take the opportunity to allow my true scholastic ability to speak for me. By no means am I using this appeal as a window to make excuses for my poor choices but to simply enlighten you on the troubling and disheartening incidents that occurred which unfortunately became my first priority.…

Today I'd like to introduce to you a man who started life outside of high school with an abrupt change of pace. Mike Mecuuce was first married in 1986 to his wife and is currently still with her 21 years later. That very same year he also entered the US Navy in 1986 where he spent a lot of time away from home in such areas as Florida, Georgia, New York, and South Carolina, where he worked with submarines for nine years and learned a whole new way of life, and experiences. One experience ended with him head first into a car bumper after having an altercation with the Royal Marines. Meanwhile back at home, as his children grew older he decided it was time to leave the military so he wouldn't miss the opportunity to enjoy watching his two girls…

Much like Willis’s situation I witnessed my high school classmate from Benque go through a similar scenario. His name was Kadeem Tillett, an uneasy, attention seeking, troublemaker. He was in my class for four years, and during the first three years he had already been involved in several brawls with students from San Ignacio. Even The famous boxer “Money” Mayweather had fewer rivals than him. He was known for never losing a fight and always getting off easy with school administration. An epiphany took place when Kadeem was placed on disciplinary probation for his senior year. His life took a complete 360, he began greeting everyone with a smile and his newly polished spirit illuminated our classroom. It was a gloomy day when a fight broke out at the entrance of the campus and Kadeem along with a few others tried to break up the fight. To his disappointment, he and all others involved were immediately escorted to the president’s office.…

Many students face out-of-school factors (OSFs), and poverty is primarily the source of educational disparities (Nieto & Bode, 2021, p. 221). More specifically, though, OSFs consist of having low birth weight, inadequate medical care, food insecurity, environmental pollutants, family stress, and neighborhood characteristics (Berliner). If you have an OSF or wounded student, it doesn’t mean that you still can’t light their fire. One thing we cannot let happen as educators is the school-to-prison pipeline. Conscious discipline, a strategy for teaching students about emotions, knowing their triggers, and giving students choices, is one way to combat the damaging zero-tolerance…

Going through many situations and conflicts at North Cape led me in temporary unfortunate paths, but greatly impacted my reason to try and change to become a more successful individual in my education and life that made a permanent change. It all started 7th grade year, I wasn't trying, it was as simple as that, until I received a suspension that was for an unnecessary conflict. I then had decided to try and get good grades, and do something worth my time and put a smile on my family’s face, and because of the decision, things got better and made me felt better as a person, and made me realize I’m not only doing this for my family, I'm doing it for myself. Departing the B and C’s for A’s, had made me think of…

During my junior year the biggest event I had to plan was the social event for the battalion: military ball. The event was one eagerly looked forward to, and rightfully so, as it was always a blast with the cadets and fostered many memories that will last a lifetime. I took planning this event very seriously and in the end many told me that it was the best military ball to date. Several cadets came to me after the formalities had concluded and thanked me for putting in the time and effort to make military ball happen. Seeing their gratitude and smiles on their faces made me feel appreciated and I knew that all the hours I had put in and almost wanting to tear my hair out in frustration had not gone in vain. During my senior year, another crucial event within the program changed. The criteria for our annual inspection had been altered drastically and we had to start from scratch will almost everything. This inspection is what JROTC works toward the entire school year, due to the fact that if a program receives a low score a certain amount of times, then the program can be disbanded. I, along with my staff, worked for months making sure that we had everything we needed and that our presentation was the best it could be. When the day of inspection finally came around, our hard work paid off. The battalion received a perfect score and was officially the best JROTC program in the county. This was the first time since my high school JROTC program’s conception in 2000 that we had received a perfect score on the…

After three back to back classes on a Monday morning, I walked into the cafeteria as usual to get some lunch. I was fully exhausted and felt pressured with the load of assignments piled up on me. A familiar face from a distant table was waving at me vigorously. I could tell from the evident smile, the familiar face was none other than Wesley Rains. I remember the same prominent smile on his face when he entered the first day of class. Neither had the smile faded, nor his enthusiasm. I waved back at him and went towards the table trying to imitate the enthusiasm he had on his face just to appear as receptive as him. “I am doing awesome,” This was my exact response when he asked me how I was doing. I knew inside it was not a lie. His smile and positive attitude had infected me already.…

Columbine, Sandy Hook, Phoebe Prince are names that embody modern-day issues school administrators face and are trying to address. Because of the public outcry and publicity surrounding these events, educators are scrambling for and implementing programs that moderate mental health issues, reduce bullying, and improve academic outcomes. However, these programs are prone to failure because they do not take a holistic approach to the cause of these difficulties. As an alternative, traditional martial arts training can be an efficient and proactive tool to address the origin of these problems. Contrary to movie portrayals in which martial artists are sometimes depicted as violent, aggressive criminals; traditional martial artists base their training…

These same kids who bullied me in middle school were acting like my good friends cheering me on whether it was my failing effort in Gotcha or chanting “chug, chug, chug” as I ruined my small stomach. Just hours ago, I had slowly crept on the bus, book in hand, to be dissected by the eyes of 50 upperclassmen, swiftly dismissed as I scampered to a seat in the very front, feeling very alone. I hoped and prayed that no one would ask for my name. All the memories of my lisp and stuttering making my name sound like a foreign language rushed to my mind. I had never been to Younglife club before, and it was uncommon for someone to just show up for the weekend camp. I had heard that the people who went to Younglife were heathens, and by the continious yelling I heard from the back of the bus as I tried to finish my book, I believed all the rumors. My mom had thrust her little Christian boy into the lions den or more appropriate the Dawgs Den, half of these students were in the obnoxious student section at our school “The Dawg Pound”. The goal of the weekend was just to survive, my mind was already made up that I was going to plead to my mom for us to move out of Morgan County. I hated my high school and knew that there was no way I would have a pleasant four years there.…

After coming back from the camp I have continued to use my voice and speak my opinion. Being confident has led me to be distinguished from my fellow peers at the University of Delaware. I was given the opportunity to be a teachers’ assistant for a 300 level nutrition counseling course. My duties were hands-on and included leading an inter-disciplinary approach to education with the nutrition and theatre departments. Theatre students were trained to act as patients and nutrition students had the opportunity to practice their assessment, counseling and communication skills. I was in charge of making sure the sessions ran smoothly and addressed any questions or concerns students had. With my commitment and interpersonal skills I was a Women of Promise Recipient and I received a junior…

On the first day of seventh grade, I met the woman who changed my behavior and view on school. That day, in my supplemental skills class, I wasn’t following anything that my teacher said and she noticed. She called me to her desk and started to have a conversation with me. She knew me, but I had no idea who she was other than the name on the plaque. She said she was the head of a camp that I used to go to and that my…

“You’ll never make it,” they all said, my boyfriend, family, teachers, and friends. It was like my life was already figured out for me, as if I didn’t have a say. The message was loud and clear. They all expected me to fail, to settle for a minimum wage paying job, to settle for just a high school diploma. For a while I went around believing that all I could do was the minimum required. But then I realized that I was capable of doing so much more. As time went on I realized that I did not have to live up to other’s low expectations and I started making a name for myself. I knew that studying a little harder for every test, joining clubs, volunteering, and running for leadership positions would later pay off.…

On June 21, 2011 Spc Brown and I were on CQ duty. 1SG, the SDO and the Platoon Sergeants conducted a walkthrough of the unit’s footprint. When they entered I was laid back at the desk watching a movie, on my phone and had my boots on the desk. I did not immediately stand up or yell “AT EASE” when she entered or exited the building. She also noticed that I wasn’t writing the log down correct and didn’t log Spc Brown out when he left for dinner chow. 1SG asked if I had read the memorandum and my 3 General Orders. I quickly responded “Negative 1Sg I do not.” Upon them leaving once again I didn’t render the proper “AT EASE” when she left the building. I was then order to study my General Orders and 1SG might stop by before pt that next morning. Upon that she asked me if I understood and acknowledges that I will come to her office either before or after Road Guard Duty and recite them back to her. After Road Guard Duty I went inside to use the bathroom and left to go take the supplies back to Regiment. The 3 General Orders are important and this essay will explain why.…

The last time I remember something as huge as starting in high school was having to move to Oregon from Alaska, but for better or for worse, here I am, attempting to make my mark on this big blue Earth. However, Highschool was never always just peaches, cream, rainbows and unicorns. If I’m to be one hundred percent honest here, I was legitimately terrified of it, whether it be the totally reasonable fear of being stuffed into a locker by a bully or getting lost in a labyrinth of corridors and passages of infinite classes and broom closets. But those fears never truly emerged up until the final days of freedom that remained from my graduation of 8th grade. As the days drew nearer, so did my fear reaching the brim of a breakdown. I was scared,…
