Wesley Rains Narrative
After three back to back classes on a Monday morning, I walked into the cafeteria as usual to get some lunch. I was fully exhausted and felt pressured with the load of assignments piled up on me. A familiar face from a distant table was waving at me vigorously. I could tell from the evident smile, the familiar face was none other than Wesley Rains. I remember the same prominent smile on his face when he entered the first day of class. Neither had the smile faded, nor his enthusiasm. I waved back at him and went towards the table trying to imitate the enthusiasm he had on his face just to appear as receptive as him. “I am doing awesome,” This was my exact response when he asked me how I was doing. I knew inside it was not a lie. His smile and positive attitude had infected me already.
I had always wanted to know how he kept up with that attitude amidst all the pressure from schoolwork. I could be a millionaire if I could extract and sell the formula of his optimism. In an attempt to make the conversation interesting, I asked him to describe himself in one sentence.

Timothy Egan’s “The Good Rain: Across Time and Terrain in the Pacific Northwest”, explains to the readers about the changes Seattle had gone through in many years in the past. The essay begins as Egan kayaks toward the Elliot Bay, explaining about the change of life in Seattle’s past and present times. He points out how different Seattle looked in the past compare to its looks today. As he states on page 127, “The city has changed its look three times in the last thirty years, and half a dozen times in the last century.” He argues that the process of continuous remodeling has led many hills to be cut in half; some rivers and lake even disappeared. Yet, he also mentions that the city is not finished; argues that no matter how complete the city becomes, every wave of fresh tenants wants to remodel. Egan tells a story about George Vancouver, the first pioneer to explore North West region and target Puget Sound onto a map eventually impacting the region to become populated; full of villages, mansions and cottages. He also tells the reader of how Seattle was named after a person named “Sealth”, a native…

In The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore. Moore states, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his” (180). In my opinion, this statement is true, depending on how people interpret it. I see it as yes, it is a tragedy that Wes II did not end up a successful man as Wes I did. However, they both had turning points that could have drastically changed their fates. The only difference was that Wes I had more people helping sculpt him into a wonderful man, and unfortunately Wes II did not. I believe that the environment, mom’s decisions, and teachers all contributed into who these two young men would turn out to be in life.…

“I sat back, allowing Wes's words to sink in. Then I responded, "I guess it's hard sometimes to distinguish between second chances and last chances"(Page 67). In "The Other Wes Moore" the environment of both Wes Moore's were completely different from each other. They both made some stupid decisions over time but who is perfect? It is expected of everyone to make some mistakes, in my opinion the main influence on their choices came from their environment. In their environment they had peers that would influence them to do things that they did not necessarily want to do. This caused them to get into trouble, but at the same token, their environment also gave them some opportunities to make it through some rough times. For Example: Wes #2 was ready to change his life around and was able to do that with a start. When he met with his friend Levy, Levy told him about Job Corps and Wes #2 decided to go. This essay describes the impact of the environment, neighborhood, and peers that reflected upon the Wes Moore’s. It also demonstrates the similarities and differences between people of the same origin.…

It was a Wednesday on the final week of senior year and the only thing happening in my classes was the exchanging of yearbooks. I had already gotten signatures from all of my closest friends, except one who hadn’t been at school the past two days; his name was Frank Gerrity. He was a childhood friend who was always known for being a trouble maker, so it wasn’t unusual for him to ditch. After not having seen him in any of the classes we had together, I decided to pay him a visit after school, since he didn’t live very far. As I was approaching his house, I noticed a police car parked outside with someone sitting in the back. It was Frank and he had just been arrested for taking a joyride in a stolen car with some guys who were “cool,” very much like the characters in Gwendolyn Brook’s poem, “We Real…

My heart raced from the ridiculous amount of coffee I had consumed that morning. I tentatively stepped into the dark, empty classroom and took a seat in the second row. As an English major, I resented the fact that I was required to take US History 201. I disliked history, and I heard rumors that my professor, Dr. Grimm, was a tough grader. The only contingent that caused me to feel slightly happy was the fact that I would be in the same class as Hannah Colasurdo, my longtime best friend. I had known Hannah since I was ten years old, and she had been there for me though my best and worst moments. Little did I know that this history class would cause me to fall to one of the lowest points of my entire life.…
