Title: Investigating the effects of changing the concentration of an acid on the rate of reaction between HCl and Magnesium.
Aim: In this experiment we are going to see the effects of using three different concentrations of HCl when added to Magnesium metal on the rate of reaction.
Hypothesis: If the concentration of the acid increased in reaction between HCl (the acid) and magnesium, then the rate of reaction will increase.
Scientific background:
For many reactions involving liquids or gases, increasing the concentration of the reactants increases the rate of reaction. As reactant concentration increases, the frequency

2- Amount of Magnesium (0.5 g) 3- Amount of acid HCl (20 ml)

Procedure:

Materials: a- Water Bath b- Droppers. c- Electrical balance (±0.01g). d- Magnesium (0.9 g) e- HCl (60ml). f- 3 Glass containers. g- Syringe. h- Stopwatch. i- Marker.
Method:
1- Get all materials needed. 2- Measure on the electrical balance 3 amounts 0.3 g of Magnesium. 3- Use the syringe to measure 20ml of HCl added to the flask in the water bath after adding the Magnesium in the flask. 4- Start the stopwatch and measure the amount of H2 produces each 5 seconds. 5- Write down the results you get at the end of 10 minutes. 6- Do the same for the other 2 concentrations. Reaction time (seconds)± 0.01 | Volume of H2 gas produced by 0.5 M concentrated sulfuric acid (ml)± 5 | Volume of H2 gas produced by 0.6 M concentrated sulfuric acid (ml)± 5 | Volume of H2 gas produced by 0.7 M concentrated sulfuric acid (ml)± 5 | 0.00 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5.00 | 5 | 15 | 20 | 10.00 | 17 | 25 | 50 | 15.00 | 25 | 40 | 83 | 20.00 | 30 | 60 | 100 | 25.00 | 37 | 75 | 125 | 30.00 | 40 | 100 | 130 | 35.00 | 65 | 115 | 140 | 40.00 | 80 | 130 | 150 | 45.00 | 85 | 140 | 155

The purpose of this lab was to determine the atomic weight of magnesium by measuring the amount of hydrogen gas evolved when hydrochloric acid reacted with magnesium. In order to measure the atomic weight I needed to measure the amount of the hydrogen gas that was evolved in reaction to the acid of the magnesium. The reaction used was: Mg + 2HCl --> H2 + Mg2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq). The major findings of this experiment were that there was a chemical reaction between hydrochloric acid and magnesium, and the reaction produced the hydrogen gas. The results also indicated how many moles of hydrogen gas were equal to the amount of moles of magnesium consumed.…

In reference to the collision theory, molecules act as small spheres that collide and bounce off each other, transferring energy among themselves when the collide. In order for a reaction to occur, there must be collisions between molecules. Through experimentation, factors are discovered that influence the reaction rates of chemical reactions include the concentration of reactants, temperature, surface area, the physical state of reactants, and a catalyst. This experiment regarding the factors that affect reaction rate tests the effects of increased concentration and temperature of the hydrochloric acid solution (HCl) and also the effect of increased surface area of magnesium metal (Mg). When glow sticks are immersed in a hot water bath, it is proven that they glow with greater intensity. This proves that an increased temperature has an effect on the reaction itself, allowing molecules that make up the liquid inside the glow stick to move with greater speed, resulting in more collisions. The balanced equation for this reaction would be: Mg (s) + 2 HCl (aq) = MgCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)…

The mass of the magnesium used is measured before the use in the experiment via an analytical balance. The known amount of magnesium is then reacted with excess hydrochloric acid which causes the magnesium to be the limiting agent in this particular reaction. The amount of HCl used is in excess in order to ensure that the magnesium reacts completely. Hence, the formation of the products , MgCl and H2 are dependant on the amount of magnesium used. By comparing the amount of hydrogen gas produced with the amount of magnesium used, we are able to determine the value of X…
