Foster Care System Reflection

College; most people dread that horrid seven letter word, but I’ve always looked forward to it. From a young age, I knew I wanted to do something that made an impact on those around me. I pondered if I could become president like every other young child does, and finally ventured upon my true passion. After a difficult day of finals my Freshman year, I drug myself down the hallway to my locker, as exhausted as ever. Scrolling down my Facebook timeline, I stumbled upon a video titled “The Foster Care System”, the video showed the true horrors that children have to endure every day in homes that are targeted on mooching off the system. Some foster homes provide the bare necessities for these children, and use the rest of that money to line their own greedy pockets.
From a young age, my mom had always said I was extremely empathetic. She’d described it as somewhat of a sixth sense; the ability to completely understand what’s going on around me. One disadvantage of that trait is the impact the emotional pain others are going through, rubbing off on me. That’s what occurred through this video. While applying for colleges this summer, the first and most important category dealt with possible majors; mine being social work. I’ve already received acceptance into Northern Michigan University to study social work, and will hopefully learn more about the ever changing system and the best way to approach my long term goals. The most imperative long term goal I have includes creating my own foster home when I’ve saved up enough money for it and after completing my masters in Social Work. The children in the foster care system have experienced events unlike any we could believe, and their courage is what has encouraged me to keep persevering for them.
