When it comes to imposing legal sanctions, there are many rationales, goals and principles of sentencing. The four traditional goals are: retribution (deserved punishment), deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation. According Clear, Cole, and Reisig (2013), “Sentencing and correctional policies may be carried out in such a way that no one goal dominates or, in some cases, that justice itself is not demonstrably served” (p. 66).
Retribution

General deterrence is making an example of the punishment a criminal receives hoping that it would deter anyone else from committing a crime. Specific deterrence is punishment implicated on a criminal in hopes that it scared them enough that they will not be repeat offenders. In my opinion, no matter how much fear you out into someone or the punishment you impose on someone, they are destined to commit crimes. There are first time offenders who will not commit a crime ever again because they felt so embarrassed about getting caught, but you have those one who seem as if they are addicted to crime.
Pro side of deterrence could be that if a criminal is giving the death penalty for murder and society knows about it and how serious that crime/punishment is, it will deter others from wanting to commit murder or anything close to murder.
Con to deterrence is that some people just don’t care; therefore, the death penalty may be a way out for them instead of spending a lifetime in prison. Every sentence should be based on the individual. …show more content…
Some people can be rehabilitated and some cannot. Society seems to think that is someone commits a crime; it has to be something mentally wrong with them. In some cases there is something wrong or going on with an individual who commits a crime and getting to the bottom of their problem and helping them overcome their problem could help restore them back into society.
