At one point in life, we all wanted superpowers. The thought of having the ability to fly or read minds always seemed amazing. However, everything has its cons, no matter what. In Alexandra Bracken's book "The Darkest Minds," the main character, Ruby, went through was not being able to control her gifts, people constantly hunting her down, and was wanted as a weapon.…
Firstly, Beveridge has provoked much thought on people in this poem by raising the issue of inequality between men and women through the theme role of authority. She definitely accentuates this aspect by explaining in the poem that the female is the provider by the child being doing the hard labour of killing the fox for her domineering uncle. (stanza 1, line 4-5). The child being forced to do something she does not want to do symbolises how much power men exude over women. Beveridge uses a metaphor in the line 'Terror barrel-rode through my stomach' to show how the child is scared and feels sick at the thought of killing an animal. The child being forced to do something she does not want to do symbolises how much power men exude over women Therefore, men have a much higher role of authority than women. Beveridge clearly establishes the fact that the child that the child is female by expressing how indifferent her uncle is to her. Lines such as: his arms like dry river beds dammed at the shoulders/his voice harsh, kelpie-cursing/would not understand if I let the fox run to the bush reveal the harshness of her uncle's character.…
There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.” This is a famous quote said by Marcel Proust. Books over the centuries have had an influential impact on the lives of many. Arguably, there are none more influential than children’s books. Children’s books contain important life lessons and teach many children the basic values they will hold for the remainder of their lives. Examples of the best range from the well-known Dr. Seuss books, to the always-popular Winnie the Pooh books. Although those are historically popular, The Rainbow Fish, by Marcus Pfister, is one that should be kept in mind. With it’s enticing illustrations, simple and descriptive context, and lesson it portrays, the children’s book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister should be considered for a spot on the “Top 100 Children’s Books” list.…
In the openings of pages 9 and 10 of ‘The Rabbits’, written by John Marsden and illustrated by Shaun Tan, techniques such as colour symbolism, font and salience and reading path are used to create issues involving the mistreatment of the Aborignal people after the ‘Invasion”.…
In the book titled, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, she describes different techniques in how she goes about writing. Lamott mentions how much she procrastinates before writing drafts because sometimes panic sets in and also how her mind wanders at times. For example, she states that “I think about someone I’m really annoyed with, or some financial problem that is driving me crazy, and decide that I must resolve this before I get down to today’s work” (17). Although I do not write all that often, if I have a task at hand that is due in a timely fashion, I find that I too will procrastinate before getting to that task. I actually have done so in this first assignment. Feeling uncertain on whether or not I am doing this correctly is a reason I believe…
The book Into the Wild, is full of life and death situations, adventure, and sorrow. The exciting part is that the all of the adventures are true, but the sad part is that the death is true as well. The whole book is about a young man named Christopher Johnson, also known as Chris or Alex. When Chris was in his early twenties, he left his home and began to travel around the world, while living off the land. The book Into the Wild goes over his adventures and tragedies that happened in his life. In order to enjoy the book, readers need to understand what they’re reading. I would certainly recommend everybody to read the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. To begin, every chapter in Into the Wild is loaded with astonishing detail. When reading…

The relationship between Tod and Copper was like the relationship between black and white kids in the 1970s. Whilst their parents would be against it, they see no harm in playing with each other. People are expected to conform to their roles they have in society. I chose this particular movie because not only is it a classic, but it is a very deep movie with adult themes. The mix of characters, each different and pursuing a different goal, combined with as subtle mix of themes, makes this a winner. The Fox and the Hound is about society and the roles we are expected to conform to.…
This week I read the lovely bones by Alice Sebold. The book begins to tell us about a girl named Susie who is kidnapped and killed by her neighbor Mr.Harvey. Once she is in heavan she can desire anything she wants and it will come true, susie says "We had been given, in our heavens, our simplest dreams." The heavan that is created is intended to be peaceful and calming. As the reading goes on Susie is able to see and hear anything she wants to on earth. Susie can see her family and friends trying to cope with her death and how much of a struggle it has been on them (which ends up breaking the family apart). You can tell that Susie wants so badly to reach out to her family in some way to help them cope and find her murderer but is unable to…
Patricia Cornwell, a famous writer, once said, that “I believe the root of all evil is the abuse of power”. To receive power in one’s life, they bring out strong emotions, such as fear or guilt to persuade the person to obey their commands. But, these people are simply exercising their power, and only have a relationship with them asymmetrically. The person will authority has the ability to limit the choices of another, and uses physically or psychologically pain only to pursue their goal. A person can rightfully deserve power, or obtain power by acting savagely. Either way, having authority in society can force people to act inhuman, and make people suffer dramatically. Similarly, in the article “Simulated prison in ‘71 Showed a Fine Line…
“Inside the snow globe on my father’s desk, there was a penguin wearing a red-and-white stripped scarf. When I was little my father would pull me into his lap and reach for the snow globe. He would turn it over, letting all the snow collect on the top, then quickly invert it. The two of us watched the snow fall gently around the penguin. The penguin was alone in there, I thought, and I worried for him.…
In order to escape from the hardships of today's society without taking a vacation, many people turn to reading. Reading for pleasure has become more popular in the past century than it has ever been before. Alice Munro is a fascinating Canadian short story writer whose stories can take readers to a much needed get away. Alice Laidlaw was born on July 10, 1931, the eldest of three siblings, born to Robert Laidlaw, a fox farmer, and Anne Clark Laidlaw, a teacher. Alice began writing as a teenager in the 1940's. She published her first story while a student at the Western Ontario University. In 1951, she married James Armstrong Munro and moved to Vancouver, where she had three children. After twenty years of marriage,…
Since every individual is different, there are many reasons why a person may become a pedophile. Most researches say that Pedophilia is probably a result of psychological factors. There are theories that Pedophilia is the result of being sexually abused as a child. If a pedophilic person was sexually abused as a child they may be more likely to sexually abuse children. Another possible cause of Pedophilia is arrested emotional development,…
Alice Walker once stated” In nature, nothing is perfect and everything is perfect. Trees can be contorted, bent in weird ways, and they're still beautiful.” Many people objects that tell their stories are non-living. Mine on the contradict is living, it moves, breathes, grows and takes essential nutrients. It is not just an object to me but also my friend .Just as the above quote stated my object is a tree.…
