Personality plays a big part in running for any political office. Especially when a whole nation is watching someone, they are able to pick up on characteristics and develop an image for a candidate. How many votes a candidate can get depends partly on this image. During the Election of 1932 people thought Roosevelt’s “ broad smile and genial manner represented a spirit of optimism that the country badly needed”(Cayton 528). America today needs that same attitude just as much as America in 1932, and people today would appreciate Roosevelt’s personality just as much as they did back then. Also, “Having overcome fear in his own life many times, Roosevelt spoke with conviction and confidence, reassuring a frightened nation”(Cayton 529). American citizens recognize a good leader as someone genuine and confident. Someone who is able to be in touch with the emotional side of the American people as well as act in a state of crisis. The candidates in the next election have promised many positive things but rarely mention a plan on how they will achieve their goals. During Roosevelt’s election he promised to develop programs to help America out of economic crisis. In 1933, Roosevelt established the “First New deal Programs to help the middle class and later the Second New Deals to help expand the first”(Dunn). More specifically, Roosevelt established “The Homeowners Loan Corporation which refinanced mortgages, and the Federal Housing Administration which was created to improve housing standards and conditions, to ensure mortgages, and stabilize the mortgage market”(Dunn). The development of these programs would be appealing to the modern world after the housing market crash in 2007. The New Deal is proof that Roosevelt is prepared to deal with a housing crash if it happens again. The american people would view him as an experienced candidate with the credentials and preparedness to be re-elected president, not someone that could be potentially making empty promises like some of the candidates in the upcoming
