Dougy experiences personal problems that leave him feeling worthless, hopeless and socially inadequate. The first person narrative structure means our understanding of Dougy is shaped from his perspective. Dougy does not introduce himself until chapter two and the use of truncated sentences and the language with negative connotations establishes his low self-esteem and the lack of identity, ‘My names Dougy. I’m nobody much. ‘Dougy is critical about his physique, academic ability and social skills, demonstrated through the personal voice and repetition of ‘I’ and the emotive use of ‘still’ – ‘I’m the tallest kid in the whole school but I don’t like that much… I’ve always been skinny, specially my arms and legs’.…

The novel that I am reading is “I’m Not Her” by Janet Gurtler. It is about the struggles a young girl, named Tess, goes through when she finds out that her sister, Kristina, was diagnosed with cancer. Tess has always been looking up to her older sister, because her sister was always the center of the crowd, sporty, beautiful one and Tess was always the smart, un-popular one. It was always hard on Tess, so when her sister was diagnosed with cancer, she felt as if she could finally be known. All of Kristina’s friends started befriending Tess, now that her sister wasn’t at school. Although Tess loved the popularity, she did have a lot of trouble too. Not a lot of people were asking how Tess was doing about the whole cancer situation but there was one person who was always there for her. His name was Clark. After talking days upon days with him, Tess began to want to be more then friends with him. But Tess also knew that she had to be there for her sister and didn’t have time to have a serious love life at that point in time. Then Tess met a boy from school named Jeremy. Jeremy has a little crush on Kristina, but is also now good friends with Tess. Tess was wondering why he would always talk about Kristina, and then he finally informed her that he always hangs out with her at the hospital when he is visiting his mother, who also has cancer.…

    Johnny Tremain Themes

I decided to select, Johnny Tremain, for my book report because of the fundamental and universal ideas the author, Esther Forbes, employs. Throughout the book, Forbes displays the dynamic of his characters and how the American Revolution transformed these boys into men. I appointed this book over others because of its underlying messages about Family, Friendship, and Patriotism. The cover of the book is nothing special, but displays the Revolution as a coming of age. The story begins by describing the life of the most gifted silversmith apprentice in Boston, Johnny Tremain. Tremain is determined to become the best silversmith but that takes a drastic turn when he decides to work on the sabbath and when Dove, one of the other apprentices hands him a broken crucible as a prank, it results in an accident that disfigures his hand and thus ends his career as a silversmith. Tremain tries to find a job, and finds one with his best friend Rab as a newspaper…

Brendan despises both Dodger and Rufus, but he puts aside his foolishness so he could be a genuinely good person. For instance, when Dodger asked if Brendan would sit up on the stairs to watch the events with him, Brendan responded “okay…. For it was his intention to spend the final two days entirely devoted to dodger.” (Hassler 263). Through this Brendan showed significant signs of maturity, he rearranged his schedule to be with a friend and is attempting to make amends for trying to avoid him before. He also puts aside his foolishness, disliking Roofus to save him from the hole during the end of the war celebration. Brendan yelled “Hey someone catch Rufus!”(Hassler 325) Brendan proceeded to run and save Rufus and bring him to his mother. This show’s maturity because Brendan is becoming an adult because he is refusing to continue pushing Dodger away, and embraces the friendship. He also shows significant maturity growth when he is being kind, sincere, and thoughtful of the people around him. White Angel Analysis

    • 1092 Words
    • 5 Pages

The story White Angel is one of a defining moment. Bobby Morrow, the focal character, remembers in great detail his life as a nine year old in the late 1960’s, and how his brother’s death changed his life completely. Bobby and his sixteen-year-old brother Carlton do everything together, and Bobby looks to Carlton as something of a guardian angel or god. In reality though, Carlton leads Bobby to a life of drugs and risk. Eventually, Carlton’s risky behavior catches up with him, and leads him to his death. In “White Angel”, author Michael Cunningham uses both irony and the repetition of symbols to show the theme of escape. Throughout the story, there are various references to music, doors, windows, planes, winged creatures, drugs, and, ultimately, Carlton’s death – all of which are forms of leaving, or escaping, the world.…
