The tone of the essay: "HOW TO MARK A BOOK" by Mortimer J. Adler (1902-2001) is serious. I can infer from this serious tone about Mortimer J. Adler’s emotional relationship to books that someone has to read between the lines in order to completely comprehend the reading. With that being said, someone has to write between the lines. With that being the case, if someone doesn't write between the lines, they're not reading the most efficient. In addition, no one should mark a book that isn't theirs.

Mortimer J. Adler made use of this rhetorical device when he objected the reason why some people don't write anything down is because there isn't enough room in the margin to do so. He mentioned someone can write something down on a note pad. Furthermore, he mentioned these notes must be permanently included onto the front and back covers of the book. Although, it may slow someone down, they're able to comprehend the argument. He also objected to lend one's own marked books to somebody else. To lend one's own marked books to somebody else would be giving one's mind away.

In addition, he also wants to persuade others to journal. When he informs others to journal he mentions journaling allows us to express our thoughts. When he persuades others to journal he mentions if we reflect on our day and write down our thoughts and feelings they will be clearly defined.
