As humans we cannot escape the great pull selfishness has on our lower consciousness. When we are born we are innocent and we believe in goodness and the world is a beautiful place but as we get older we start to realize that life is really hard. And we want it to be as easy as it was when we were kids so we become selfish and start to look out for ourselves and only ourselves. This varies with every person but there is always that lower consciousness nagging at us to try and find the easy way out, try and find all shortcuts to make life as easy and painless as possible. Luckily there is a solution to this problem but as of now it’s part of the problem. Education can be a fantastic thing and it can bring out the best in people. …show more content…
They whaled so many Blue Whales that they had to have special kinds of ships that were literally factories that could float. These ships had to be able to remain on the sea for up to seven months on end and be able to carry a whole crew and be able to cut whales up and hold their resources. The biggest ship, called a drydock, was in scandinavia and it was 671 feet long and it was the ultimate whaling ship. Because they were specifically going after the biggest whales the ships had to compensate for such size. The whales never had a chance. Before these mega whaling ships the blue whale was part of the rorqual whale family and was unable to be caught because of its immense size and speed so first generation whaling ships generally steered clear of them. Once modern technology came along with cranes on ships and exploding harpoons it made it easy to get the bigger whales. And why wouldn’t you? There’s more blubber and more meat therefore more money in it. The cost of whaling also got more and more expensive. The ships costed up to 16 million dollars and the whaling companies had to compensate and kill more whales to validate the cost of the ships. Even though the whalers knew they were depleting the population of blue whales at an alarming and unforgiving rate they didn't care. Because in that time they were living they were getting paid and making enough money to be comfortable with there family at the time. But that’s the tragedy of the commons in my opinion. No one thinks ahead and thinks of anyone else except themselves and doesn't care that they are changing the grander scheme of things by killing off a whole entire race. By cheating mother nature and taking what they can because they can and whatever happens because of it after they are dead doesnt matter because it doesn’t effect them here and
