Freedom In Rip Van Winkle, By Washington Irving

The story Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving demonstrates how Rip gains his personal freedom from his wife just as the colonies obtain freedom from the King. Rip wants to be free and independent , so he finds activities to do in his community to stay away from his wife. Irving uses Rip to connect history and how important being independent, and free not only for Rip ,but also for the colonist of that time. After, Rip wakes up from his deep sleep he is no longer deprived by his wife just as the colonist are no longer under the rule of the King. His old community is now considered the new Republic of the United States ruled by George Washington, and as changes come with the development of the American flag ,election of a president are things Rip ,and now his new community has is now their freedom, and longer ruled by a monarchy.
One of his alternatives to escape from his wife "Was to take a gun in hand, and stroll away into the woods." This would allow him to get away from his wife "dinning in his ears about his idleness, his carelessness. " When rip falls into a deep sleep he also gets independence from the king and his wife. He naps through the American revolutionary war and the death of his wife, as she suffers from "A fit of passion to a New-England pedlar." Rip defines freedom as being able to self-govern himself without hearing a word from his wife.
