Although the market for separates is certainly viable given promising growth in test markets, it is not a market that makes sense for Hart, Schaffner & Marx (HSM) to compete in. The trend certainly shows a divergence in how some customers view their needs with regards to semi-formal clothing, but the firm runs the risk of diluting not only the perceived quality of its clothing, but also alienating its current client base that is partial to the experience HSM offers in its stores. This experience includes personalized expertise on new fashions, custom tailoring, and the status associated with purchasing and wearing the company’s clothes.…
One of the most useful resources for ideas were the Fashion weeks, showing collections of famous and up and coming designers in New York, London, Paris and Milan. The most coveted pieces, cuts, fabrics and colours were noted and further observed on reputable websites / such as Vogue.com, Style.com and Wsgn.com. /and in magazines / Vogue, InStyle, Glamour, Bazaar etc. /. A survey was conducted amongst high street shoppers to pinpoint the biggest competitors and get to know the base customers` habits so the company could plan successful targeting. Textile trade fairs confirmed the choices made for the seasons` prints and fabrics, also enabling Miss Selfridge to collect unique, affordable additions to its range and at the same time follow the styles invented by reputable fashion designers.…

An economic downturn has influenced the clothing market since the early 2000s, which has led to a change in consumer buying habits. Because of the downturn, customers are very price sensitive and prefer less expensive apparel, as over half of the clothing sold in the apparel industry has been done so “on sale”. To cut their costs, many companies have begun to outsource. In 2005, imports accounted for 82% of all sales.…

French Connection the high street fashion retailer could be in danger of disconnecting with its customers. Last year, investors were extremely anxious when the firm announced that sales were down by over 18% for a quarter. The British firm, which has enjoyed unparalleled success over the last five years, is now facing tough challenges ahead, as it tries to recapture the magic of its past sales successes. CEO Stephen Marks founded the company in 1972. He named it after his favourite movie. In the late nineties, the firm enjoyed meteoric growth. The company gained worldwide coverage, thanks in no small part to the firm’s use of a controversial four-letter acronym, which it used as its logo. Emblazoned across t-shirts, caps, bags and sunglasses the manipulated swear word became ubiquitous. Their T-shirts with some sexually lewd double entendre slogan on it became hip and de rigueur. However the concept may now have lost its appeal and fashion status. Becoming seen as tired and tacky. Where to now for French Connection?…

The so-called “Primark effect”, whereby consumers regularly throw out old clothing and buy new ones to keep up with trends, is taking place in the fashion industry due to the wasteful nature of fast fashion. The poor quality of cheap clothes means that consumers would rather throw them away and purchase new ones than pay to get them repaired. It is a good idea to give our unwanted clothing to charity to make money for the poor or local communities and decrease the amount of textiles, which are sent to landfills. However, my voluntary job experience in Oxfam makes me feel that charity is not the end of garment waste. The Oxfam shop that I used to work for receives a large volume of donations every day, and most of them derive from fast fashion. Sometimes not even the charity will sell them due to their poor quality. Additionally, some consumers just cannot be bothered to take their unwanted clothing to charity.…

However, by closely following generational fashion trends as well as our own customers' purchasing preferences, we design our inventory to meet the broad needs of our clientele.
