French Film Critique: Inglorious Bastards

Inglorious Basterds is an intense action thriller with a comedic twist put together by director Quentin Tarantino. The movie is somewhat violent but real fantasy of what many people wish would have happened to Adolph Hitler during World War 2. Inglorious Basterds is the story of a small group of Jewish-American soldiers assembled by Lt Aldo Raine played by Brad Pitt. This group of soldiers are ordered to strike fear into the hearts of soldiers of the Third Reich by brutally killing Nazis. Eventually Lt Aldo Raine and his men cross paths with a women named Shosanna played by Mélanie Laurent. Shosanna is a French-Jewish woman whose family was murdered by Nazis while they occupied France when she was younger and she now runs a movie theater in Paris. The plot of the movie intertwines both Shosanna and the Jewish-American soldiers in an attempt to assassinate Hitler during a movie premiere inside her theatre. The film concludes with Shosanna being shot while in the projection room, but even though she is killed her mission is not a failure. Lt Aldo’s men complete their mission in the assassination of Hitler in a final gory act as they unload their machine guns on him insuring his death.
I found the movie entertaining and very easy to watch as with most of Quentin Tarantino’s films. The strength of this movie is that it has many scenes that build enormous tension leaving the audience on the edge of their seats. One of the most suspenseful scenes involves a Nazi character known as the “Jew Hunter” played by Christoph Waltz entering the house were Shosanna and her family are hiding. He enters the house questioning the French owner if he knows of anyone who may possibly be harboring Jews. The scene closes with the “Jew Hunter” ordering his Nazi soldiers to shoot out the floorboards were Shosanna and her entire family is hidden. Shosanna luckily escapes with her life but the rest of her family unfortunately does not.

The storytelling technique made use by Cameron in the film Titanic is special because history and fiction is inculcated within the plot. For example, Cameron made use of the history of RMS Titanic as the main plot of the film. But he was aware of the fact that mere history of a cruise ship will not satisfy the global viewers. So, he decided to inculcate fiction and romance to the main plot. Parisi (1998), states that “Cameron’s gift was to create a unique movie going experience, one audiences couldn’t get from any other film” (202). One can easily identify that inculcation of fiction and romance is helpful for the director to be free from portraying a film from historical perspective. At the same time, the historical…

The problem of les banlieues (the suburbs) became particularly prominent from the early 1980’s onwards. Violent confrontations between suburban youths and the police took place in a number of the suburbs surrounding France’s major cities like, for example, Sartrouville and La Corneuve near Paris and Valulx en Velin and Venissieux near Lyon.…

"Glory" depicts a period in the American Civil War emphasizing on the war modus operandi and troop movement techniques. The film focuses on the first real African-American regiment, 54th of Massachusetts, and the way these soldiers are trained and prepared to fight. Even though they acquire a new status as soon as they enlist for battle, they still face prejudices and are discriminated against by the white men. They're not trusted to be able to fight with the same ardor and patriotism as the others and this puts them on a lower and inferior rank. Surprisingly enough, things change by the end of the movie, when Massachusetts 54 is engaged in battle and proves the efficiency and the courage of the black men who succeed in making a difference by changing the course of the war. Even though they were not victorious in the battle, they managed to show the world their value, and they brought an important victory for the entire mass of black people against the prejudices and misjudgments of their white neighbors.…

The film gives a good insight of the Holocaust through the eyes of the child. It shows that the holocaust was very horrible and frightening. It wasn’t fair on the Jews at all. The Jews were killed for no reason. Only the fact that they were Jewish, which is really unfair. The Germans were the enemy here, not the Jews.…

I don’t exactly know what to feel about this film. It was a good laugh and a painful thing for me at the same time. Guido (Roberto Benigni) is such an optimistic human being, a positive father to his son Giosué (Giorgio Cantarini) and a loving husband to his wife Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), who he treated like a princess if I may have to mention. As for me, being a person who freaks out when things don’t go right, I have perfectly seen how Guido made life beautiful for his son and wife. It hurts me to see him hiding the truth from his son by reinventing the things that happens inside the concentration camp. In the midst of that threatening situation, Guido manipulated his world and made life beautiful for him and his family. I think that is the very essence of the film, making life perfect for you, even if it really isn’t for the entire world. It is important that we find beauty even in the darkest and cruelest of places. Dora amazed me too. I will not forget how she willingly set foot into that train containing all Jewish people. I can see how strong her love is for her husband and son that she can give up her life just to be with them. I have seen her change from a spoiled girl who fell into Guido’s arms and turned out into someone braver and stronger, someone who thinks not much of her own sake anymore.…

Moulin Rouge is celebrated for its art direction, music, and performances. One of its biggest endeavors is the set design. With a combination of real sets and computer generated images, Moulin Rouge manages to showcases a 19th century Paris, France as a world of moral decadence but undeniable beauty. The set design further pushes the message of France, at this time, being a place of plague, poverty and sin; but also a place of art, music and beauty.…

St. Thomas Aquinas once said, “It is not theft, properly speaking, to take secretly and use another's property in a case of extreme need: because that which he takes for the support of his life becomes his own property by reason of that need.” This quotation is really applicable to the life of the life main character who is Jean Valjean. Though stealing is an erroneous act but he extremely needs it and by this reason he may be free from sin. Remember he was sent to imprisonment for stealing bread and spent more years there for attempting to escape. He stole bread to feed the hungry stomach of his sisters. Though what he did is opposing with the laws but it is not opposing with his conscience. He followed his conscience than the law. Law is created by men while conscience is a gift from God.…
