Friar Lawrence knew of the great feud between the families and the trouble it was causing throughout the kingdom. He saw the love between Romeo and Juliet as a way to end this feud and bring peace to the two families. His intentions were obviously good. He believed that if he married these two children that the two families would have to come together and end their feud but he did not thoroughly think through the consequences of this marriage. he failed. He should have realized that the feud between these families has too much history and can not be ended by a simple marriage. He also knew that Romeo was extremely emotional. He had just seen Romeo deep in love with his beloved Rosaline and overnight he completely forgot about her. Knowing this Friar Lawrence still proceeded with this marriage. All though his intentions were good, he did not care for the well being of the children's marriage.
After the unforeseen duel between Tybalt and Romeo Juliet was left heartbroken and did not know what to do.
On one hand her true love killed her beloved cousin but if her love had not killed her cousin her cousin would have killed her love. After a lot of crying and yelling she decided she still wants to be with Romeo. She then goes to Friar Lawrence again seeking help. He realized that it was his fault marrying these two and that he had to fix it so he came up with an elaborate plan to get the two together. Once again his attentions were purely good but it did not turn out the way he wanted too. Because of a plague the letter containing the details of the plan were not delivered to Romeo and Romeo thought that Juliet had died which had also left Romeo heart broken. Friar Lawrence once again tried to do good but it ended in
heartbreak.
Friar Lawrence is to take the full blame of the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, but should not receive a punishment. He should receive restrictions on his job as friar that make sure nothing like this can ever happen again. He should not receive any severe punishment because he was not intentionally trying to harm the two. For example after hearing that Romeo did not receive the message he ran over to Juliet's tomb trying to prevent what happened but he obviously failed. Although he is to blame for what has happened, it was not intentional in any way, so he should not be punished. Not only this but the Friar also ended the feud between the families so at least something good came out from this huge mess.
In conclusion, Friar Lawrence should receive restrictions on his jobs as a friar preventing from marrying people that easily so this will never happen again. Although the deaths of Romeo and Juliet were caused by the actions of Friar Lawrence he did not intentionally or physically kill the himself. This is why he should not have any severe punishment. No one should have to pay for the death of Romeo and Juliet besides the families themselves. They should have been closer to their children and understood what they were going through to prevent something like this. If only they knew how Romeo or Juliet were felt about each other they could have done something to bring them together or at the very least explain to them that what they see is not love but just a simple crush.
