Frida Kahlo created the painting Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird in 1940 in Mexico City. The painting is an oil on canvas and is currently at Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin.
FROM THE WORK: 1. Line
Several vertical lines occur within the leaves behind Frida herself. The strongest lines are created on her thorn necklace that hangs on her neck and down her chest.
2. Light & Value
The light source of this painting is coming from above the painting. A full variety of value is presented with the darks to lights extracted in the figure, and ground. The lightest tint appears within the leaves and on her shirt, and the darkest shade is shown in the monkey and cat on her shoulders and in her hair.
3. Shape/Volume/Mass …show more content…
The environment is less symmetrical with two different creatures behind her shoulders and the more random placement of leaves and the contrast of the yellow leaf behind her head. Keeping the painting balanced by positioning the monkey and cat over the shoulders create three balanced sections.
3. Emphasis and Focal point
There is an emphasis on her uni-brow and moustache. The focal point of the artwork is her face, which is established by placement, contrast and line. The uni-brow is vertically centered and almost horizontally in the middle. The black coloring of the uni-brow is sharply contrasted against the paler, reddish-brown color of her skin. The hummingbird at the bottom not only “points” upwards to the face, but has also been used to imitate Kahlo’s brow, drawing further attention to her facial features. From the uni-brow, the eye then travels back down to the hummingbird, then back towards the cloth crown and butterflies.
