Frida Kahlo When Children Draw
In the article, When Children Draw, the author Sandra Crosser PhD. talks about how children start drawing at an early age. Children start scribbling around the age of 18 months, not intending to illustrate an object at first, but rather, to entertain themselves. Even at this early age, toddlers use drawing as a form of expression. As the article states, “children use drawing to express their emotions”. The same is for artists, in some cases by just looking at their work we have an idea of what they were feeling at the time their work was completed. A good example is Frida Kahlo (not in chapter 6), she painted a lot of self-portraits and in many we can see the pain she was feeling. We should continue to encourage our kids to keep drawing
not only to express their feelings, but like Dr. Crosser states in her article, “as a way to improve physical, social, emotional and cognitive development-and to have a lot of fun” (Crosser).
