From then on in photographies, Kahlo can be seen hiding her injured leg with long dresses or behind her healthy leg. This event caused Kahlo’s jealousy towards Cristina to grow, deeming her as more beautiful and popular, furthermore causing Kahlo to look at the outside world with more resistance. Nonetheless, Kahlo’s illnesses and life experiences would soon become the focus of her life story, turning negative things about her positive as a strategy to survive. Being Guillermo’s favorite daughter, Kahlo was enrolled in the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria , completely abolishing the maternal role Frida was expected to take. Kahlo’s new environment provided her with the comfort she needed, a distraction from the conservative society she was living in. Through the school, Kahlo was able to grow academically and ultimately met her future husband, Diego Rivera, who was 36 at the time while she was 15. Unfortunately, Kahlo experienced another tragedy. Taking a bus to return from the school back to Coyoacán, the bus was involved in a catastrophic accident, leaving Kahlo severely injured. A handrail impaled Kahlo’s stomach and pelvis, causing Kahlo great pain mentally and physically.
