Fried Green Tomatoes
There were many examples of how the characters in the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" manifested power in and through their lives. One example of this is with the character Big George. He was a black man who lived in the town. He also did the barbeque at the Whistle Stop Cafe. A big example of how he manifested power was through his dealings with racism. This movie took place in the 1930's, a time period where the black race was greatly looked down upon and thought to be lesser than white people. This could also be seen when Idgie's friend tells her he has to bring her to Georgia the next day because she is being convicted of Frank Bennett's murder. He basically tells her to pack up and leave the town so she is not arrested and also tells her to leave Big George in the town to get arrested because the people wanted to have someone hung for the crime, and they would rather have it be a black man than a white woman. So because of these biases, Big George had to find the power within him to overcome these obstacles and to live a decent life, despite the hardships he had to face on a daily basis because of his skin color. Big George also found power within his own family and even with Idgie. So, by combining their determination and strength with his own, Big George was able to overcome the barriers of racism.
Another character in this story that manifested power within him and in his life is Frank Bennett. While Big George's power was exhibited in a positive way, Frank Bennett's use and manifestation of power was in a negative way, which not only affected him personally, but others as well, more specifically Ruth. Ruth ends up marrying Frank, and everything seems to be fine. Except one day Idgie sees a bruise on Ruth's face, but Ruth just tells Idgy to leave. But, later in the story, Idgie comes back again and rescues Ruth from her terrible marriage. It turns out that Frank Bennett was very abusive towards Ruth. Frank could have manifested the power he had into being a

The Notebook is one of my favorite love movies of all time. The reason I love this movie so much is because that main characters Noah and Allie go through so many trials and finally end up together in the end. This movie I feel shows me how strong their love for each other really was and I now feel as if it is meant to be it will always find a way. Looking at the movie as a reference to get a better understanding of how lifespan development works, I realized that most of the trials that Noah and Allie went though were part of stages of development. The theory of stages of development was created by Erik Erikson, he believes that we go though certain stages in our life and if we do not get passed them properly we will end up with underdeveloped skills in our lives. The Notebook has many different stages that the main characters go though such as, stage eight, integrity vs. despair, stage five, identity vs. identity confusion, and stage six, intimacy vs. isolation.…

    Lennie's Power

Lennie’s power is his strength but Georges power is his mind/wits. George is able to talk his way out of sticky situations and get what he needs and what he wants for both him and Lennie. George has to help Lennie through life and think of backup plans in case Lennie gets in trouble and they have to quickly get out of town and find a new job which is hard to do during the great depression but George is smart enough to get a job for both him and Lennie. Georges wits sometimes get people skeptical of him because he thinks things through before they happen and he’s so quick to answer some things. The boss and curley were skeptical of him because he wouldn’t let Lennie talk because he didn’t want him saying anything wrong so the boss thought George was trying to steal lennie’s money. “Then why don’t you let him answer? What you trying to put over?”(22). Curley got mad at George for not letting Lennie stand up for himself so he could fight Lennie but George insisted on talking for Lennie so curley wanted to fight Lennie more than he originally wanted to so he fought Lennie and almost got Lennie and George in trouble. But they didn’t get in trouble because George and the others but mainly George talked/threatened Curley out of telling his dad who is the boss and getting them fired from yet another job. Due to Georges thinking ahead they had a game plan if Lennie got in trouble again which he did and Lennie knew where to hide and what to do. Georges quick thinking made it so he didn’t get in trouble for curleys wifes death and he was the one who got to kill Lennie instead of curley or the others who would’ve shot him in the gut so he would die slow and painfully. But thanks to George he died listening about the story of their future which is Lennie’s favorite story and he died painlessly because George shot him in the back of the head. So George helped himself and Lennie a lot by using his mental power even though it…

In Fannie Flagg’s esteemed novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café, characters and lessons from both the past and present inspire our main character, Evelyn Couch, to make changes in her life. The epitome of middle-aged misery and menopausal depression, Evelyn learns lessons from the stories and advice given to her by characters such as Mrs. Virginia ‘Ninny’ Threadgoode help her lift the veil of gloom cloaking her and aid her in reestablishing her dreams and goals – such as gaining a healthier and happier marriage with her husband, Ed, or losing all her unnecessary pounds. What sparks her journey to this better life, one she can actually look forward to at night rather than considering suicide, are the stories of a small Alabama town in the 1930’s and the residents who fight for happiness in a difficult time; Evelyn takes these stories of times past and uses the morals and advice given by Ninny to face each of her problems and attack every day with confidence. The transformation Evelyn embarks on is a sign of how strong she, or anyone, can be when their head is in the game, and as we see Idgie still selling her foods at the end of the book, we conclude that the past can live on even into the present.…

    Fight Club

The movie, Fight Club, has many themes dealing with some of the class-discussed vocabulary. Through a scene by scene, and dialogue-based analysis of the movie, I have found that these themes are emphasized through discussions, interactions, and non-dialogue scenes between the main character, his imaginary sidekick and the society that has had such effect on the main character. Some of these themes or topics that are shared by both the movie and the class vocabulary appear randomly, sporadically, and repeatedly throughout the movie. Most of the scenes have mainly to do with the materialism in their society and its limits on the freedom, which the characters are trying to obtain. Others deal with how they, the movie's characters, feel a sense of alienation and this alienation distorts relationships developing due to their self-determination. There is also how family interactions help to shape our development on our vertical and horizontal relationships. Then finally, hedonism and how it affects the way we treat each other and how we interact within society.…
