My evaluation of the book is that there are some strengths and weaknesses. The weaknesses are that the author does not give much background on some of the characters, some things in the book are not explained fully, and the ending of the story was fast paced and too short. Some of the strengths are the author uses lots of imagery to describe the characters and their personalities, She continues the themes of friendship and what it means to be a hero, and the author portrays the characters in a way that causes the reader to connect and relate with

He was a Greaser but has been frightened by the Socs. He has been stereotyped as a juvenile delinquent by and has always been made fun of. Ever since Ponyboy has been brought into this gang life he fails to see the good side in any Soc and is to stick together with the Greasers believing that each one of them lives up to their name as being the jet set rich kids. However, there is one input from a Soc that makes Ponyboy realize that the Socs and Greasers both go through the same struggles, Cherry. She opened up Pony’s eyes to believe that there is only one difference between the Socs and Greasers. “You Greaser have a different set of values. You’re more emotional. We’re more sophisticated--cool to the point of not feeling anything. Nothing is real with us.” (Hinton 33) From this Ponyboy learned that you can’t just judge someone from what people tell you or how you have been taught to know them as growing up. Each and every Soc has their own problems that their going though, just like the Greasers and Pony also believed that maybe their worlds weren't so different because they both watched the same sunset, which was a big part of Pony’s life. The title of this book relates to the story, because in the book, Ponyboy and Johnny are "outsiders." They can be thought of as Outsiders because they are labeled Greasers although they do not act like hoodlums, like the rest of the Greasers. They are thought of as Greasers just because they live on the East Side of town, and because they slick back their hair. But Ponyboy and Johnny are different then all of the other Greasers because they show their emotions, and are sensitive.…

In the story “The Outsiders”, Ponyboy Curtis and Johnny spent lonely days together in an old church which strengthened their friendship because there was no one else to talk to and they only had each other. I know this because Ponyboy said to Johnny, “You ain't like any of the gang. I mean, i couldn't tell Two-Bit or Steve or even Darry about the sunrise and clouds and stuff” (Hinton 78). He means that he trusts Johnny and feels Johnny can understand him like Sodapop can and he feels that he can be himself around Johnny and not have to act tuff. Another example is when Ponyboy said, “On the fifth day I had read up to Sherman’s siege of Atlanta in Gone with the Wind, owed Johnny a hundred and fifty bucks from poker games” (Hinton 79).…

This novel has been translated into 30 languages and many fine personal connections with either the plot for the characters themselves. My connection in the novel outsiders is when pony boy tells us that his parents died in a car crash and my dad died in a boat crashing that is kind of the same thing. My favorite quotient from the book the outsiders is when Johnny is about to die and he says to pony boy stay gold stay gold.
