The Outsiders Duty

What does it mean to be part of a group? This question is answered in the novel, “The Outsiders”, by S. E. Hinton. The novel also answers the question, What is your duty to others? In the novel, Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry, Johnny, Two-Bit, Dally, and Steve are all part of one group of “Greasers”. First of all, what does it mean to be part of a group? It means to have very close friends that rely on you and you can rely on them. You trust them and stick together. In the novel, “The Outsiders” there is an excerpt on page 3 it says, “Or I could have gotten one of the gang to come along , one of the four boys Darry and Soda and I have grown up with and consider family.” It also says, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped, or someone
If you are a greaser, your duties might be to protect yourself, your group, and your family or other close friends. In the novel, Ponyboy and Johnny do something very valiant that gets them in the newspaper. Since Pony and Johnny were in Windrixville trying to escape from the fuzz, they were hiding in a remote location. This place was an abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain. When they get back from breakfast, they saw that the church was on fire with 4 or 5 children in it. Then, the two of them jump out of Dally’s car and go into the fire to rescue the kids. In the process of that, they successfully save everyone but they each get burnt pretty badly. In the novel it says, “I caught one quick look at his face; it was red-marked from falling embers and sweat-streaked, but he grinned at me. He wasn’t scared either.” This was found on page 92 in the novel. The novel also says, “‘I swear, you three are the bravest kids I’ve seen in a long time.’” This excerpt was found on page 95. Finally, the novel, “The Outsiders” answers a lot of other questions including the two answered in this essay. The main theme is what is your duty to others? Therefore, this theme is proven because of the evidence and the way that Ponyboy and Johnny were able to be valiant
