All of this celebration took place between January first through January seventh, after all the decorating happened people would shoot whatever type of firearm they had. As a part of this reform Peter the Great thought mathematics was extremely important, at least for the children of noble people, and he made sure they were to learn it. As a punishment for not learning mathematics was that you were not allowed to marry until you learned it. In order to learn the math the children had to go to a special school and after they learned how to do the math they then had to teach in the special mathematical schools. While they were teaching they had to stay at the schools, but the teachers were given food and even paid for their time there. Once they mastered the material they received a certificate that they themselves had to hand write stating they had mastered the material. Without that certificate they could not get married. The advantages that someone could see from the reforms that Peter the Great made would helping Russia be a key player in the trade

Towards the end of the 17th century, Russia began undergoing dramatic, yet selective, internal changes. Peter the Great led the first westernization of Russia in history, permanently changing Russia and providing a model from which westernization attempts elsewhere were based on. Westernization was used by Peter and his successors to promote Russia's expansionist empire without intending to transform Russia into a truly Western society.…

In 1629, a young and determined prince named Peter Alexeyevich Romanov took the crown of Russia. However, Peter inherited a state where the real power was held by a large group of traditional landowning elite, known as the boyard nobility. After a weak rule by Michael Romanov and his son, who was backed up by the nobility, the traditional Russian service system was breaking down, as the nobility attempted to avoid duty in the army. As a result, the whole country was in decay and the army in tatters. Peter the Great, however, decided to reverse the trend and decided to consolidate what little power was given to him by his weak predecessors. In an attempt to make Russia a great Baltic power, Peter the Great would permanently change the Russian military and the social structure of his country…

Though he faced stiff opposition from groups such as the Streltsy, Peter was firm in his belief that these reforms would lift Russia up to a higher position in the world, and potentially form her into a world power. These reforms covered many areas, ranging from shaving to the church. They usually applied to any and all of Russia’s citizens, and were enforced not by a roving band of mercenaries, like in the time of Ivan the Terrible, but in a far more docile form of compliance - fines. This is shown to be true of most laws, as shown in Peter’s Decree on Wearing German Clothes, where it reads, “And if contrary to this the Great Sovereign’s decree some people wear such Russian … clothes and ride in Russian saddles, the town gatekeepers are to exact a fine from them,” Though, a different, slightly more severe punishment is referenced in Peter’s Decree on Shaving, wherein it states, “And whosoever does not wish to do so, but to go about with [traditional Russian] beard and mustache, is to pay a [hefty] fine… and from the peasants a [small] toll is to be exacted everyday at the town gates, without which they cannot enter or leave the town....” Peter’s westernization also included reforms to politics, to the dismay of some nobles and…

Peter the great was a strong and tall man with a very hot-tempered character and combat experience as he was a member of the Michael Romanov dynasty. Peter visited the west during 1697-1698, upon his return to Russia he was determined to westernize it similar to Europe. His first priority as to all Kings was to build an army of great power, composed of Russians, Europeans and peasants he created an army of approximately 210,000 men while implementing European technology to make Russia powerful. Russia’s Tsar, Peter the Great, had a great dominance of power during his reign and never distributed it with the nobility . St. Petersburg, a port city with western influence, became the new capital of Russia after its move from Moscow. The Tsar forced his nobles to cut off their beards (a sign of God’s favorability), wear common clothes, and live a western lifestyle as commoners. The creation of the Table of Ranks made sure that nobles who sought to serve high positions were “important” enough to do so. As is custom with most nobles, the Russian nobles owned vast amounts of land and serfs, much like the…
