2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit the coast, just off of Japans borders, the earthquake its self, moved the earth off of its axis. The massive 5 minute long earthquake moved the earth’s tectonic plates, which then triggered a 15 meter high tsunami, less than an hour later. There was a 5.6 meter high defence wall, bordering the power plant, which sank about a meter during the earthquake. The defence wall was destroyed from the raging tsunami, which flooded the generators that were cooling the reactor cord; this immediately sent the plant in to meltdown mode. After the nuclear fallout, the surrounding area of the plant was severely affected by radiation contamination; this caused many plants and crops in the area to be contaminated. Unknowingly eating contaminated food can be the root cause for thyroid cancer. Contamination can occur from the dust near the plant may settle on water, supplies, crops or grass. Crops are sold from the exclusion zone, rite across Japan; this can affect Japan as a whole, as contamination may spread across the country. (World Nuclear
Association, 2012)
The plants nuclear chain reactors had been successfully shutdown shortly after the earthquake hit. Control rods were put into place in to the reactors to absorb neurons; the neurons prevent the initiating of chain reactions in the nuclear power fuel that normally happen when the reactor is running. (World Nuclear Association, 2012)
When the earthquake occurred, some lives were taken, although throughout the devastating tsunami, hundreds of thousands of lives were washed away in the tides. All though, there have been no sickness caused by radiation, about 100000 people have been evacuated from their beloved homes to ensure
