Functional Theorists
Functional theorists look for positive consequences for participants such as self-esteem, grades, career aspirations, and the career mobility patterns of former athletes. Functional theorists believe in harmony and that if social change happens that leads to dysfunction and possible chaos; self-correcting mechanisms of the social system can reverse the dysfunction and bring the system status back to the status quo. In other words, everything will work it’s self out for the better, and there is no need to cause more dysfunction in society then already created. Dayton Public school’s new rule can be viewed by both theorists, the functional theorists can look at this new rule change as a positive change to the Dayton Public school’s society. While the conflict theorist will look at it as a negative change that will give most students false hope in life. This will help them in not only sports but their education. By putting these kids in sports, they are being shown what it is like to be a part of something a little bigger. These kids will also experience the feeling of achievement. Sports for the youth can show these kids how to put what they learn on the field, court, track, ect. to their education. By giving these kids the feeling of successes, it will show them how to not only have that feeling of winning in sports but how they can also “win” in school by keeping their grades up. It all comes back to motivation, this rule creates a goal for these kids, which builds their motivation to thrive in their education. This rule also keeps more students in school which then helps them continue their education and have a high success rate in their life. There are very small areas in society that can generate such passion and interest and elevate its participants to almost divine status and raise them from humble beginnings to lords and ladies of the manner. For this reason sports can be used as a powerful medium for socialisation; although not exclusively as other social interactions can have the same results. Sports importance in Britain with regards to its ability to give common ground and transcend age, culture and class and establish the traditional values that we all share as being British give prominence over other social constructions. Since participation in sport is predominately social and requires the interaction in small and large communities, factors that are inherently important to British culture can be instilled. These factors or character traits such as honour, equality, fair play, respect for self and others, teamwork, Loyalty, patience, need for physical fitness, perseverance, responsibility, and self-control etc when socialised will result in a well balanced society. It is relevant however, who is doing the socialisation and what they are teaching (Coakley pp39). Therefore, sport alone does not instigate positive character traits or affect in the behaviour and attitudes of its participants. It can however be used as a powerful catalyst through programs developed by the societies, organisations, institutions and the significant others of the participants themselves (Coakley, pp93). Through Sport, society and culture can change preconceptions of traditional patriarchal bias, which favours those with able bodies and minds.     The functionalist perspective looks at a society in a positive manner and sees it as stable, with all the parts working together and views it on the macro-sociological level. Under the functionalist view every social aspect of a society contributes to the society's survival. The macro-sociological level means that a society is studied on a large scale as a whole.     My favorite perspective in sociology was learning about the functionalist perspective aka functionalism. I do know that it is one of the major concept theories and perspectives in sociology. From class we learned about Emile Durkheim’s interest in this theory on how social order is possible on how society remains relatively stable through functionalism. “Functionalism does interpret every part of society on how it all contributes to the stability and the survival of society”. I guess the reason why I liked the study of functionalism is for the same reason why I like to be a functional person, I love for there to be order and I believe that everybody plays a role in that sense, either they know they are playing that part unknowingly or they do know and they are part of the order. I cannot stand for dysfunctional people especially when it can have a negative impact on a group or society. For example some of the TV shows out there like the Simpsons, family guy, two and a half men show our children how to grow up in such a family with the understanding that such a manner that being dysfunctional is normal but it’s not. Dysfunctional families carry it on to their kids and people they are around, this can be a direct result of their parents and may also be affected by addictions, such as substance abuse like drugs and alcohol.
