There are so many modern conveniences in the world today, one of them is being able to reach anyone and any moment of the day. With cell phones, or more commonly “smart phones” we can fit dictionaries, video games, applications, and even social interaction into our pocket. The first “cell phone” was made in 1946 by AT&T, weighed about three pounds, and was only able to make three calls in one city simultaneously. Calls had to be manually set up by an operator and you would usually have to wait about 30 minutes to place a call. Today our pocket sized gadgets connect to cell towers automatically and connect us with people around the world in about 30 seconds. Everywhere you turn you will find cell phones and other social…

First I would like to talk about the history of cell phones. Now a days you see people on cell phones all the time. To see just how much things have changed in the last little while, all one has to do is pick up something as simple as a detective novel written no more than 10 or 15 years ago (SHC). Getting a hold of someone wasn’t so easy. You had to call them on their house phone and leave a message if they didn’t answer. There was also the pager, which was an electronic device that receives messages and signals the user by beeping or vibrating. If someone didn’t have a pager like in the 1980’s getting a hold of him or her while they were doing something was a difficult task if you didn’t know where they were. The idea that you could call someone's office phone and be relayed automatically to their cell phone while they're stuck in traffic on the 401 would seem like pure science fiction even to people living in the 1960s -- people who thought Star Trek's "personal communicators" were a futuristic innovation (SHC). Cell phones were a dream to many people and technological scientist. Having a device where you can talk to someone miles away in seconds wasn’t possible. Twenty-five years ago, the phone cord was cut and a revolution began (Cellphones). But the first cellular phone wasn’t made that long ago. After decades of planning and testing, the cellular phone finally emerged as a consumer product in…

For the working class mothers and fathers, a call from the boss on a Saturday afternoon to come into work is never far from possible. Many people are now virtually accessible almost anywhere at any time. Even as I sit here typing this paper, my own shiny, rectangular piece of molded plastic and metal lies inches away from my fingertips, beckoning me to use it. These extraordinary inventions that allow us to stay connected to our family, friends, and co-workers are also the cause of less face-to-face interaction with people in our day to day lives. The cell phone has become the favored communication hub for a majority of…

Communication has evolved in several ways since the beginning of time. A telephone is a telecommunications device that permits two or more users to conduct a conversation when they are not in the same vicinity of each other to be heard directly. A telephone converts sound, typically and most efficiently the human voice, into electronic signals suitable for transmission via cables or other transmission media over long distances, and replays such signals simultaneously in audible form to its user. The telephone allows people to communicate with others that are not around them. In modern day society people use texting and calling several times a day to communicate with people in a convenient manner. The popularity of the cellphone has made it possible to make calls or texts to communicate with those that are not immediately around one. Texting and calling are both very easy means of being able to reach someone or to send a message. Calling and texting are both means of communication and have many similarities, however, are different in many aspects.…

Smartphone users are so used to communicating over the phone or through text messages that they rarely understand the etiquettes of face to face communication. With little experience preforming the act, many are unaware of how to conduct themselves properly. According to Bian and Leung, “Some users even put the mobile phone on the table for all to see, implying that if the interaction is not interesting enough, and they have alternatives. Furthermore, some users appear invasive, impolite and disruptive” (62). Checking their phones and not maintaining eye contact while holding a conversation, is one of the many mistakes that smartphone users unintentionally make. Yet not only is the etiquette of direct communication affected but also the conversation. Body language speaks volumes over what a person is actually saying. People who are unaccustomed to this form of interactions will be unaware of these subtle cues. According Thornton, smartphones have been proven unfavorable to conversations held face to face in the present. A persons mind begins to wonder to the interaction opportunities within the broad range of their mobile devises and their actions soon reflect these thoughts (480). The mere presence of smartphones has an effect on the way we communicate effectively. Russel made the claim…

The long, deep conversation grabs the attention of both callers on the phone and provides a clear focus on the dialogue. A phone call provides sensory language, reveals real emotion, and conveys a contagious and sentimental feeling between two callers. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, thirty-one percent of the sample size prefer texting than talking on the phone, while fifty-three percent prefer a voice call than a text message. The high percentage of people who favor calling over texting is due to the personal interaction. Additionally, individuals are able to enhance their real social skills and be more vocal in their discussions. For instance, individuals are able to use their vocal skills in a job interview on the telephone. The interviewee is able to communicate his or her ideas effectively and showcase his or her abilities in the respective position. Moreover, in a recent study conducted by Dr. Albert Mehrabian, he names the three main components of effective communication: body language, tone, and spoken words. Voice tone gives dimension and emotion to words while increasing the effectiveness of the conversation. Nevertheless, communicating on the phone provides a personal and interactive conversation and is an effective mode of…
