4, 1892. April 26, 1893 the second woman to graduate was Agatha Tiegel. May 2, 1894 was when Gallaudet was renamed from “National Deaf-Mute College” to Gallaudet College in honor of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. On February 6, 1910 Gallaudet University fell victim to a fire that destroyed the fourth floor and repairs cost $25,000 in order to restore the damage, due to cold weather the College was covered in ice due to all the water being thrown onto the fire, however few personal belongings were damaged and the College was repaired in two months. September 26, 1917 is the day Edward Miner Gallaudet dies in his home in Hartford, Connecticut. On September 1, 1949, the first international students enroll, only one of the eight international students was hearing, this hearing student enrolled because he wanted to deaf Thai students. In 1986 Gallaudet was granted university status, and only two years later the Deaf President Now movement began and established the first deaf president Dr. I. King Jordan and “Board of Trustees” chair Philip Bravin. The current president of Gallaudet is “Bobbi” Roberta Cordano. President Ulysses S. Grant started a tradition where the president would give the students their diplomas, this started in 1870. The last presidential visit to Gallaudet was in 1994 by president Bill Clinton. The most popular majors are business, visual performing arts (theater), and psychology.

Gallaudet does offer an online program and the tuition is slightly different, students taking an online course will be charged with tuition, fees, and books only, transportation, personal expenses, room, and board fees are not included to determine the amount of financial aid
funding.
