Gary Soto's Short Story 'The Born Worker'
The Born Worker

I am here to talk to you about what I thought of the story, "The Born Worker". "The Born Worker" is a short story novel written by Gary Soto. Gary Soto was born in 1952 in Fresno, California. He is an author of above twenty books and has won numerous awards for his poetry, short stories, and nonfiction. Much of Gary Soto's writing is focused on the Mexican-American experience. I like how he focuses on the Jose in the beginning as aging quickly and acting way more mature than he should be at his age. At the beginning it was talking about how his parents and him have to work hard for everything that they get. After that Jose parents tell him that his cousin Arnie is coming over. So when Arnie gets there the narrator

I like how he narrates the story, too. The one with young love. The way the author showed us him walking down with his girlfriend while he was narrating the story is a great technique. The piano in the background is another good technique.…

In the excerpt from the autobiographical narrative by Gary Soto, the author uses vivid imagery, allusions to religion, and change in tone to recreate his experiences from his six year old self. Soto begins by involving the reader into the excitement that he feels while glaring at the freshly baked pies, he then vividly represents how he transgresses his valued religious principle, and steals the pie. He concludes by illustrating the aftermath, and describing the remorse that he underwent after realizing he had given into a reprehensible temptation.…

It is good to realize that the author is a young Chicano man willing to raise the voice for all the ones who are not able. It is important to keep transmitting this kind of message because people needs to remember being illegal does not make them less. This kind of works should continue, mostly after the last elections which led to an apparent unfavorable result for the Chicano people. After all, as Veliz said, the main idea is to change peoples’ heart because only love will defeat all the hate and racism that exist…

Nevertheless, my family needs the fortunes that we need to keep thriving. My recruiter, Hernando de Soto, does not have the best looks as his eyes discomfort me. I have high hopes for this expedition as we have well over 700 men, 10 ship, and enough food to last us through the harshest of winters. I will very much miss my family so I shall spend as much time as I can before my departure for the New World.…

Martinez uses interior monologue to characterize his protagonist Manny. As Manny observes the Mexican field workers he says “for some reason I thought he was the best man on the field” (17). This suggests that Manny also admires other people with good work ethic, and sympathetic to the Mexican immigrants. While talking to Mr. Hart Manny says to himself “Too embarrassed to tell him that attending another school was just a dream of my mom’s... another one that probably wasn’t going to hatch…” (43). This shows Manny doesn’t share personal thoughts with his teacher. After the boxing match Manny has an epiphany “the whole fight shouldn’t have been given so much meaning…” (138). This shows Manny feels apart of his Razo, but not ashamed because he sees the situation more deeply. After being called out at the party “… I saw the reflection of a ridiculous boy. It was me looking at myself…” (181). This reveals Manny just realizes who he was at the time. When sitting in his living room Manny realizes how “wondrous” his family and home are (216). This shows the point where Manny finally accepts his own life for what it is.…

First, he describes all of Cesar’s traits in the perfect tense. This effectively plants trepidation in the reader’s mind. Another, more subtle foreshadowing technique was the use of allusion. Rodriguez at one point parenthetically describes an overcooked artichoke as “Yorick’s skull.” This refers to the famous scene in Hamlet, in which the prince soliloquizes over his dead court jester, while holding the man’s exhumed skull. That monologue in hamlet evokes a possible…

The first theme that I think is apparent is the search for a better life. Conditions in the rural Philippines are hard for the peasants. There is hardship and exploitation. The peasant children have no childhood because they are working in the fields or in the market or home with the parents at an early age. The boys leave their parents' home in their early teens to find work and a better life, trying to escape the harsh and hopeless environment. Their families know and expect this. Carlos' mother tells him several times that he can go and that they are poor. They go from menial job to menial job trying to make out a living. The parents can't give them a better life in a farming environment and the parents and children know this.…

In my thought, this story show how emigrant Cuban suffer when he immigrate from his country with his family because of the revolution. I liked their determination and their insistence, when they work together for have a good life for them and their daughters. I was sad because they always remember every thing in their country with other Cuban people, who they sat with them, and their conversations was revolving about their memories.(Menéndez, 2001).…

Third, the writing of another ending for the novel El Filibusterismo. In the movie it was shown that Dr. Jose Rizal was hallucinating and he saw the character he created, Simoun appealing to him about his works, and telling Dr. Jose Rizal of how he should have ended the novel. Which lead to Dr. Jose Rizal in reflecting to himself and wrote another climax of his novel El Filibusterismo. This is inconsistent with history because there and it is obvious that is something made up for the viewers to be more interested in the film.…

    - on his way home to Brunswick. He doesn't know for sure if his wife takes him back. This story he tells six teenagers who are on the same bus as Vingo. To start with Vingo is a very shy person, because he doesn't speak very long with the girl, just short dialogues. This can be seen in line 25 up to 27. In addition he doesn't show any emotions and sink into the silence. Vingo is a romantic and respectful man, because of his settings to his wife. He says to the girl who talks with him, that he understands, if his wife choose an another man and forget him, but if she wants to take him back, she hangs out yellow handkerchiefs on an oak tree in Brunswick. This portrays the narrator in line 50 up to 54. In contrast of his wife and his three children, the narrator claims that he is a very thoughtful person. This can be concluded from the fact that he sits all alone the way back home, without doing anything, just listens to music or to read a book.
