Gas Chromatography Lab Report
Gas Chromatography Analysis of Product Mixtures
Gas Chromatography Guidelines, Handout.
Introduction
Gas chromatography is a technique used to analyze chemical compounds that can be vaporized and separated in a gas phase column. Once separated, the analyzed substance is passed through a detector and data is obtained. The samples that we are going to analyze are: the EtOAc from Simple distillation, the Fraction 1, Fraction 2, and Fraction 3 from the Fractional Distillation.

Experimental Procedure 1. Inject a 5 µL sample of EtOAc from the Simple Distillation. Determine the actual % recovery of the purified EtOAc based on the % composition observed from the gas chromatogram. 2. Inject a 5 µL sample of Fraction 1 from the Fractional Distillation. Determine the actual % recovery of the purified EtOAc based on the % composition observed from the gas chromatogram. 3. Inject a 5 µL sample of Fraction 2 from the Fractional Distillation. Record the % composition of EtOAc and BuOAc as observed from the gas chromatogram. No calculation for Fraction 2.
Inject a 5 µL sample of Fraction 3 from the Fractional Distillation. Determine the actual % recovery of the purified BuOAc based on the % composition observed from the gas chromatogram.
Results
Initial Volume of Fractional Distillation: 20mL
Volume of Fraction 1: 2.8mL
Volume of Fraction 2: 8.9mL
Volume of Fraction 3: 7.1mL
Initial Volume of Simple Distillation: 10mL
Volume of EtOAc Simple Distill: 9.6 mL
Actual %recovery of EtOAc(Simple Distillation): (9.6mL)(99.348%) = 9.5mL = 95% recovered
Actual %recovery of EtOAc(Fractional Distillation): (2.8mL)(91.323%) = 2.6mL = 26% recovered
Actual %recovery of BuOAc(Fractional Distillation): (7.1mL)(96.03%) = 6.8mL = 68% recovered
% composition of EtOAc = 65.204%
% composition of BuOAc = 34.388%

Chromatography serves mainly as a tool for the examination and separation of mixtures of chemical substances. Chromatography is using a flow of solvent or gas to cause the components of a mixture to migrate differently from a narrow starting point in a specific medium, in the case of this experiment, filter paper. It is used for the purification and isolation of various substances. A chromatographically pure substance is the result of the separation. Because purification of substances is required to determine their properties, chromatography is an indispensable tool in the sciences concerned with chemical substances and their reactions.…

Conclusion: During this lab I learn how to do simple and fractional distillation. Although the group I worked with only did simple distillation, I carefully observed how the group that did the fractional distillation. We collected all the results, to have a more precise range on what the results were. One way to produce an error in this process would have been if our procedures were done wrong or reversed or if we placed the compounds in a improper…

The distillation procedure is initiated by gradually heating the mixture until it reaches the temperature of the liquid with the lower boiling point. This liquid then turns into a vapor and leaves to mixture and is collected by the set up apparatus. In fractional distillation a vigreux column is used. This provides for surface area for condensation to occur. At each condensation event the vapor is enriched in the low boiling point component and the liquid is enriched in the high boiling point component. The surfaces where condensation occurs are called theoretical plates. Separation is more efficient when there are more theoretical plates. Therefore, fractional distillation is more efficient in separating than simple distillation. Another new technique was gas chromatography. Gas chromatography is used to separate volatile components of a mixture. First, a small amount is draw up into a syringe and the contents of the syringe are placed into a hot injector pot of the gas chromatograph. The components of the mixture evaporate into the gas phase inside the injector. A carrier gas flows through the injected and pushed the…
