A Love That Can Never Be In the novel, The Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux, we are introduced to three main characters; Christine, Raoul, and the mysterious Opera ghost-Erik. There is a love triangle between the three. Raoul is Christine’s childhood friend, who saved her scarf from the sea in Peros, France-they remained friends until Christine’s father died. Erik is known as the “Angel of Music” to Christine because before her father died he had told her that he will send the “Angel of Music.” Christine is the daughter of a renowned violin player, but her father died when she was at a young age. It’s not real love that they have for each other. Raoul fell in love with her because of her voice and Christine loves Raoul because he is good looking. In the novel, it tells us the Erik kidnaps Christine and forces her to make a decision to choose between him or Raoul. If she chooses him, then he will destroy the Opera house and everyone inside of it. He gives her a day to make up her mind and she chooses him to save everyone. While all this is happening Raoul and the Persian is trapped inside of Erik’s torture chamber.

They find a way out of the chamber. Erik kisses Christine on the forehead and she kisses him back. He breaks down in tears and tells her “Go and marry the boy whenever you wish.” (190) Three weeks later he is dead because of a broken heart. In conclusion, the love triangle is very innocent because Christine is child-like. Raoul only loved her for her voice and Erik loved her because he craved the feeling of love. It’s a story of a lonely man who doesn't and have never felt love in his life. When he did find that love he became very possessive and jealous over the girl. In today’s society, personality is favored over
