Gatekeeping Strategy In Healthcare

I think that the gatekeeping and Medical-Home Strategy has their own set of problems and benefits within the system. However, no medical system will be perfect. Referrals is an effective way to assure patients are receiving preventive care that will improve patients health. But, there is a shortage of primary care physicians in the United States (U.S.) (Shi & Singh, 2015). Medical-Home Strategy will help increase the primary care system that will aid in the depletion of primary care physicians. Plus, it is proven to reduce medical cost without damaging the quality of care the patient receives, and there is a decrease in medical errors (Rosenthal, 2008). When a Medical - Home Strategy consists of a specialized medical team that is organized in a way to provide continuum care for a patient, then it would be an effective strategy to use (Pinol, Lozano, Mendieta, Barbero, Roig & Lecuona,
2016).
However, I do like the option to give patients a choice to chose their own method but give incentives to patients that use gatekeeping and Medical-Home Strategy because both strategies promote receiving preventive care (Shi el
al, 2015). There should be incentives for patients that routinely use methods that promote preventive care like a discount on medical insurance. Just like physicians needing incentives to reduce medical costs (Shi el al, 2015). So do patients, especially, since patients are accustom to may unneeded medical care and test these days.
