Currently today in the United States Homosexuals face various problems when it comes to their partners and most importantly their children. Gay and Lesbian parents are facing discrimination because of their sexual orientation. Allowing same-sex couples to adopt children has made people assume particular aspects about Lesbian and Gay couple’s lives and the effects it could have on their children. American culture tends to reject or feel threatened by new ideas, and instead of looking at the overall picture some decide to just stick to the traditional family structure. People are always entitled to their opinion but they also should remember that equality needs to be distinguished from identity.
Studies of gay parenting are necessarily small, since there aren’t many gay parents. The report cites estimates that gay couples and single parents are raising almost two million American children (Barlow). In the U.S. twenty-two states currently allow single homosexuals to adopt and twenty one states currently allow gay and lesbian couples to adopt (Barlow). In a few states judges decide on a case-by-case basis, so you may have to go through the process before you know if you can adopt or not. The ability of gay couples to bring up a child should not be denied only because they are gay. Homosexuals may be looked down upon by society, but they still are humans and have morals. These morals they possess, may influence a child more than those morals taught to a child with heterosexual parents. All over the world, children suffer in families consisting of alcoholics, drug abusers, and sexual abusers etc. (Mesika). It is not possible that these environments are safer than what would be provided by homosexual parents. The main concern should be the well-being of the child, not the homosexual parents.
