The gay marriage controversy has been a popular subject for many decades, even centuries. Over the years, society has heard numerous debates on either the equal treatment of homosexuals, or the discrimination of the same. The neo-Christian politicians use religious references to indicate that homosexuality goes against the principles of the Bible and God, while the liberals of society keep fighting to eliminate the discrimination of homosexuals. During the last two decades, many interest groups have been created to defend gay rights; the most common argument in society nowadays is the right of gay marriage. While some states have already passed laws to allow gays to marry, many states still believe that marriage is a sacred privilege that only a man marring a woman can have the right to. While there are numerous interest groups on gay marriage, there are only two groups that will be discussed in the next pages. For the group fighting for the right of gays to marry, The Human Rights Campaign, and The American Family Association will represent the group against gay marriage. Both interest groups will be analyzed and compared, as well as the methods used by both groups will be discussed and evaluated.
The first interest group analyzed is The Human Rights Campaign, also known as the HRC. As stated in the HRC’s website, this organization was founded in 1980, and their goal is to become the largest civil rights organization, and to achieve the equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans (HRC, About Us). The HRC wants to educate and engage as many members of society as possible to end the discrimination against LGBT nationwide and worldwide. Their main objective is to fight for equal rights and benefits in the workplace, in society, and in the formation of new LGBT families (HRC, Mission Statement). The Human Rights Campaign logo is well known by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans, the blue square with a yellow equal sign
