As Kitty Calavita writes in her work The New Politics of Immigration, "A long tradition of research has established that anti-immigrant sentiments often surface during economic downturns or social transformations..."(Calavita 263). This round of nativism was unlike any other instance of U.S. nativism in that it focused almost solely on immigrants' consumption of social services and the burden on taxpayers. This idea was the underlying cause for the proposal of Proposition 187. The concept of balanced-budget conservatism is used to explain the fiscal focus of nativism during this time. This ideology is of balanced-budget conservatism was based in the disdain for the public sector and suspicion of government spending.…

Texas has a reputation throughout history of differing views from the federal government in laws and politics pertaining to social, fiscal, and educational issues. On the whole, Texas operates as a largely conservative state. Because of this, policy-making is often right wing. With the institution of a Democratic, liberal president, the State’s dissent from the Federal government has only increased over certain issues. One hot topic of the 2012 Presidential election was immigration. With the major increase in immigration, it is no surprise that the issue was so emphasized. Between 2000 and 2011 there was a 30 percent increase in the foreign-born population. The immigrant population grew from 31.1 million to 40.04 million. (americanprogress.org) Texas has a special interest in this subject due to the fact that they have a population of over 4 million immigrants. Texas is among the top three states with foreign born individuals living within its borders, giving the state a vested interest in the nation’s immigration policy. (Orrenius et al., 1)…

Over time, the United States Immigration system has undergone a myriad of comprehensive reforms which have proven to greatly impact the composition of its population. Though it is unclear whether these specific policies were products of theoretical assumptions, such as those associated with a country’s economic stature, the social norms of the time period, or further contributory factors such as the existing political landscape, the issue of immigration has continued to remain problematic in the 21st century and requires a structured approach. Preceding the current Obama administration and previous Bush administrations of the early 2000s, relatively recent major reforms were made to the U.S. immigration system through the passage of bills beginning in 1986 under the Immigration Reform and Control Act, in 1990 under the Immigration Act, and in the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (Bodvarsson and Van den Berg, 368). Each of these legislative bills proposes different sets of provisions which include, to some degree, address comprehensive immigration reform. However, the policy strategy to include these broader reforms on recent immigration legislation have largely failed to emerge from beyond the preliminary procedures of Congress as a result of strong opposition by today’s lawmakers.…

Immigration has recently been a brewing topic within the media and has caught many people’s attention. This issue has brought multiple political figures and opinions into-the spotlight, each accompanied by a plan and part of a political agenda. Central American immigration into the U.S. still remains unsolved despite the efforts of President Obama who had promised a comprehensive immigration reform. Some believe that America was built upon immigrants, and that smart immigration practices will benefit the economy and nation as a whole. However, others feel that immigrants hurt the nation by limiting the number of jobs available to Americans, and bring crime and public insecurity. Since the Immigration and Reform Act of 1986, both the Democrats…

Today our nation is faced with many problems and one that seems to stand out is an immigration reform. Many of those who reside in the U.S may not see it as a big issue, but in reality it really is. An immigration reform would not only help our nation’s struggling economy but it will also allow our government to keep better track of its residents given us a sense of higher security. Those who oppose such reform fear it will only serve to decrease job opportunities due to the increase in completion for places and ultimately burry us deeper in this troubling economy but with an immigration reform, there would be a stop to the separation of families, a boost to the economy and nation’s security will also have its benefits.…

    Illegal Immigration

America has traditionally been known as a “melting pot,” welcoming people from different countries. However, during the past few years, there has been an influx of illegal immigrants that a lot of people view as a threat to the sovereignty of our nation. This flood of undocumented immigrants has spawned a debate about whether illegal immigrants should be allowed to cross national borders and stay in the country to start a new life. In June 2008, an article titled “Argument for Illegal Immigration” was published in the Los Angeles Times where Milton Friedman discusses illegal immigration and its benefits to our nation. According to the article, “…immigration, over the Southern border, can be a good thing for the economy.” While some people might agree that illegal immigration has its benefits, these benefits are outweighed by the drawbacks. The United States should put more money into security to patrol its borders because illegal immigration is more harmful than it is beneficial not only to the country, but also to the citizens of the United States.…
