What is gender? What is sex in biological terms? Are gender and sex the same thing? Explain why or why not?
Gender refers to the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person’s biological sex. Sex refers to a person’s biological status and typically categorizes them as male, female, or intersex. They are not the same thing. Gender is how one acts to express or communicate their gender. (American Psycology Association, 2011)
How do gender and sex contribute to the concepts and constructions of masculinity and femininity?
Gender and sex contribute to the concepts and constructions of masculinity and femininity in many ways. The major contribution comes from the male body naturally developing testosterone which builds muscle and muscle is a major concept of masculinity. Gender expression is another major factor in the ways that we express ourselves with our clothing, communication patterns, and interest.
Do our concepts of gender and sex contribute to the ways we embrace gender and sex in diversity? Yes I definitely think that our concepts of gender and sex contribute to the ways we embrace gender and sex in diversity. I think it has a lot to do with stereotypes such as that men are tough and aggressive and women as being emotional. This is something that could definitely be the other way around. We need to act like we should with any type of diversity and keep an open mind and delay any type of judgment before we actually know somebody.
