Gender Differences: A Comparison Between Barbara And Gavin
For this activity I talked to my friend Barbara and my neighbor Gavin. Barbara is a 23-year-old white woman who attends Western Michigan University and Gavin is a 26-year-old white male who has never been to a University. I asked them both if they could name any scientist of color or any female scientist. If they could not think of any (or very few) I then asked them how they felt about it. When I asked Barbara if she could name any scientist of color or women scientist. She named Ernest Everett Just, and Marie Maynard Daly. I asked her if she could explain to me what they are known for and how she knew of them. She explained to me that Ernest Everett Just was a biologist and a scientist (he is also an educator) who made developments in fertilization, cell division, and worked on many different studies with cells. She told me she learned about him in high school when she needed to do a project on him in her advance biology class. Barbara explained to me that Daly was the first African American woman to get a Ph.D in chemistry. When I asked how she was familiar with Daly, she just answered, she learned about her sometime in high school. I asked Barbara how she felt that she could not name more than two people of color in science and only one woman. She said that she feels if you asked her about scientist in general she would not be able to …show more content…
I asked him how he felt about that. Gavin said that he felt really embarrassed and that he could not think of anyone. He mentioned that he is very surprised that in his 12 years of education that he did not have any information on scientist in history especially no knowledge of people of color or women in science careers. He posed the question asking if children in school now in 2016 are being taught more about historical figures in science, or if they are still bypassing that

The gender stereotype limits a person’s full potential and well being. People do not acknowledge their personality and unique characteristics. Society influences a child’s opinion on color; therefore, they are not allowed to think for themselves. With the information that I have researched, I would like to slowly break down this specific gender stereotype by teaching elementary children to accept and love their unique characteristics. I would go to schools in my region to do this. Gender stereotypes of color must be broken down to allow children to think for…

In Garp and Helen’s relationship both of them had affairs with people. Garp with Alice and Helen with Harrison. They both were in th wrong even though they stay together because they think of it as if they stop everything about them will be perfect and they will love each other. They didn’t love each other when they got married but they have gotten to the point where they do actually love each other. Their gender roles play a part because the two families are complete opposites. Garp stays home and cooks, cleans, gets the kids ready for school while Helen goes to work and makes money for the family to live off of. In the other family they are the opposite, Alice stays home and cooks, cleans, takes care of the kids. While Harrison goes…

Women in computer science would like to see more representation of women in computer science fields since there is a lack of females in those fields. Also, in nerd culture there has been an increase in diversity. This is due fact that there is more diverse characters in things nerds are interested in, like comic books. In “What Color Is Your Superhero?” Adam Serwer discusses how comics and its audience have become more diverse. Serwer writes, “Ethnic diversity is worming its way into the panels of superhero comic books and into the legions of people who love them.” Because new superheroes are becoming more diverse, the people who are interested in are becoming more diverse. This example points to a solution in fixing the racial gap in STEM fields; if there is more representation of people of color in STEM related fields, other people of color will become interested in it. Children and teenagers gain inspiration from television shows and movies, and if there were more shows featuring people color in STEM jobs then more children will become interested in going into STEM…

There are gender differences in criminal behavior solely based up genetic makeup. Gottfedson and Hirschi’s theory provides two facts that make me believe that males are more criminogenic than females. First, as stated in the theory, females are less likely to commit crime because they have higher levels of self control. Second, parents tend to be more vigilant in monitoring girls than boys parents are likely to be more consistent in the application of parental management with girls than boys. Both of these factors I find to be extremely true, especially when dealing with self control. In general, males have more testosterone than females and are more likely to let their emotions get the best of them. When talking about crime I could see how…

Developing an understanding about the diversity of the population in the United States of America is paramount when interacting with demographics different from my own. I fell that the information that I received about others during the Cultural Diversity course has assisted in understanding and relations between those I interact with on a daily basis. One of the subjects covered during the course that stands out in my mind is the discussion of stereotypes. The discussion of stereotypes has made me conscience of my own misunderstanding of other cultures. The Jewish community was one of my most misunderstood cultures. My main misunderstanding about the Jewish community was anchored in religion. Being of Christian faith the Jewish people were like villains. After reading and reviewing about Jewish people I have more understanding and realize that their beliefs are very similar to my own (except for the obvious difference). In addition to learning about other racial, ethnic, and cultural history groups I learned some new information about my own. I was not aware of the vast cultural influence African Americans have in the United States of America. Of course I am aware of African American influence in agriculture, literature, and music. What I was not aware of was African American contribution to the sciences. Some notable contribution to science came from Granville Woods who had a number of patents to improve electric railway systems, including the first system to allow moving trains to communicate ("Wikipedia", 2012). Frederick McKinley Jones contributed by inventing the movable refrigeration unit for food transport in trucks and trains ("Wikipedia", 2012). Lloyd Quarterman worked with several other black scientists on the creation of the atomic bomb (code named the Manhattan Project). In addition Mister Quarterman also…

What makes someone capable? Although people may not want to admit it, the public will often evaluate an individual’s ability based on their gender, race, social class, and overall appearance. Marie Curie is remembered and praised as one of the greatest scientists of all time for her discovery of radioactivity. However, she had to work extra hard to even be considered a scientist due to her being a lower- class woman who lacked the opportunities that her peers received. Her colleagues’ prejudice caused them to degrade her ideas and even work against her for a long period of time. Marie Curie went on to make great strides in the scientific community and win two nobel peace prizes, proving that the concept of a capable person is not always black…

I was quite surprised when I found myself coming to the conclusion my original hypothesis and direction for my capstone would have to be altered. As I continued researching my new discovery, I soon realized that my change in direction would also alter who my mentor was. Panicked, I spent many days stressed, wondering, “Who could possible help me understand how the lack of successful women of color role models impact young girls of color?” After contemplating for a long time, it occurred to me the best person to speak with someone who had experienced the struggles of looking for an affluent WOC (woman of color) role model as well as being one. This is why I choose Cassandra Woodson as my mentor, she is both a professional Black female role model…

Race is a pattern-based concept that has led scientists and laypersons alike to draw conclusions about hierarchical organizations of humans, which connect an individual to a larger preconceived culturally constructed group. Racial research has a long and controversial history. At the turn of the 20th century, sociologist and civil rights leader W. E. B. Du Bois was the first to synthesize natural and social scientific research to conclude that the concept of race was not a scientific category. Contrary to the then-dominant view, Du Bois maintained that health disparities between blacks and whites stemmed from social, not biological, inequality (Du Bois 1906). A child's sense of perceptions of the world as fair, equal, and just are significantly…

Your construal of the second week’s materials breaks down the color line’s problems. This sensitive problem is generated by racial smog that infiltrates throughout our society such as Latinos referred to institutions of higher education as a “white space”. For example, your fairly sheltered life caused some early misconceptions until the participation of several school sports proved otherwise for your African American teammates. The reason as to why is because she built a nice rapport into a more equal playing field, regardless of subsisting in a predominantly white area. By and large, this biologic myth in genetic differences are just bursting with falsities or allusions that can easily dismantled by understanding, social interactions, and…
