Gender Differences Between The 1900's And Today
The evolution of the female sex between the last one hundred years, and now is astounding. Since the 1900s, or even earlier, women have worked towards equality, and while this fight is still not over, women have slowly grown as a whole. Society has changed drastically over the last century, and although women may still be viewed in the same old-fashioned ways, many things have changed for the better. The similarities and differences between women one hundred years ago, and women today, are particularly intriguing and something that many should recognize. Just imagine how different life was one hundred years ago; women faced obstacles some of us could only dream of. Women were not given the same freedoms that are granted to us today, so independence …show more content…
The number of women in the workforce has spiked, creating a dramatic increase compared to working women in the 1900s. Women now are becoming more and more independent financially, no longer having to rely on a romantic partner or family member to live on their own. Many women even work as hard, if not harder, than some men, making them the main provider for their families. In today’s world, many women are seen as strong people who go after what they want, not waiting on a man to tell them to go get whatever they desire. As previously stated, women could not vote before 1920. Now, women can not only vote, but are granted the same liberties that are given to men. Women are becoming the smartest people on the planet, going to school, and many attending a university to further their educational desires, just as men have been doing for years. Additionally, women today are not made to stay home and be housewives, however, society still seems to generalize women as stay-at-home moms. This may be true for some, but most women work full or part-time jobs year around. It’s as if women in today’s world feel the need to use and be thankful for the independence that their ancestors were not rightfully given. Today, it is easy to say that all women have some sort of career, hobby, and or social life. Ladies of the twenty-first century live much fuller and more fulfilling lives in comparison to those of the elder generation. Eventually, women became more independent, being able to lead their own lives without needing help from

History is often taken for granted in today’s society. Without certain events in our nations past, the America we live in today would be vastly different. More specifically, women in the 21st century would live dramatically different lives if it were not for the women who changed the image of women in America forever. The New Women of the Progressive Era resisted domesticity and the Flapper allowed women to have fun. Rosie the Riveter told women that “We can do it!” while the “Happy Housewife” brought on political and economic changes during the post war era. Though not all of these groups put women in the best light; they all helped form the path for future women of America.…

Women have sought out equality and its benefits for the longest of time. Their desire to own themselves and control the world’s perspective of women has been motivation throughout decades. Looking back as far as 1865, Women have always worked hard to care for the family even while they stood behind the man. Women used their skills to manage the home by bringing income in through making and selling clothing. There was a time when it was unacceptable for a woman’s shoulders to be bare in public, and unheard of to be seen with their belly visible. Sex without marriage was obscene as was the option of having sex with preventive methods. And they eventually won the battle of who can and cannot vote. Women struggled against men for and objective females for the right to enlist in the military. Abortion was brought to existence to protect women from birthing unwillingly. As American women's roles evolved over time, women were confronted with contradictory messages about their place in society. Traditional ideals about women met new challenges with each generation, from outside forces like war and economic depression, and from the activity of women themselves. This caused many women to struggle with societal expectations that did not fit their reality, and with an identity that did not fit expectations. Colonial society delegated to women the job of protecting and sustaining the morality of the people, yet it refused them a public forum in which to do so; the nineteenth century ideology of domesticity presented a standard of maternal care that could not be universally achieved; the twentieth century offered women the opportunity for education, independence, and a place in the labor force, but expected her to return to her proper place in the home after marriage.…

Throughout history the roles of women have changed dramatically. Since the 1950’s, women have slowly but surely evolved into the individuals one sees today in public offices, law firms or even the five o’ clock news. However, this evolution did not occur over night. Although women in the 1950’s and today have dealt with similar stereotypes, today life has greatly improved because women aren’t as pressured to get married, are taken more seriously in the business world, and are even making as much or more money as men.…

They call the United States of America the land of equal opportunity, where hope is a given and all you have to do is dream. However this was not the case for many people, such as the women in the United States around the late 1860 through the 1920s, when our beautiful country began opening its doors. As a matter of fact when we look back at our history, during that time period, it seems that women weren’t even allowed to dream. They would live their lives according to the rules and standards that society had set for them. From childhood they were only taught how to cook and clean, how to keep a house in order, and how to care for children. Education wasn’t an option and they were often shamed if they spoke out; in other words their opinions were meaningless. It seems that the female gender has come a long way in history, but it took many brave women to stand up and take radical steps to change the future for the upcoming generations. For women in the 1860s through the 1920s, the American Dream of equal treatment and the right to vote seemed to be a myth due to the strong male opposition throughout the workforce, the political field, and even the home; however, all the efforts that the brave women who spoke out and worked towards equality and suffrage soon paid off to make their dream a reality through the right to keep and earn profit from their working land and the 19th amendment being added to the Constitution.…

Women today in 2016 couldn’t last two minutes living the life of a woman in the 1900s. 100 years ago, females were known as the weaker gender but more virtuous and were not allowed to do anything unless they had a husband. They didn’t have any rights, authority, or opinion about ANYTHING! It was illegal for women to do a lot of things, and here we are 100 years later, we can do whatever we want, when we want, however we want without anyone’s permission. To sum things up, a woman is her own boss and controls everything in her life. She can follow her dreams without anyone stopping her and a woman can make her own decisions. Everything…

As constantly seen throughout history, women have been battling and questioning society’s standard so they can be seen as individuals rather than a lesser being in comparison to men. These civil liberties of owning property and having the right to vote prolongs further than that. Women want to be seen in the same degree as men when it comes down having an education, a place in office, being in a predominantly male workforce, and the right to manage their reproductive lives. The fight for women's rights even extends to modern day with the rise of feminism and the demand that men and women should be considered equal in any social, political, and economic entities.…

As our new nation progressed, so too did the roles of women. They went from working at home fulfilling domestic needs to factories where they would slave for over fourteen hours a day. Even though the work was hard, women were now making their own money and playing a more dominant role in society. Therefore, they often fought for suffrage, abolishment of slavery, and temperance. The seed for women’s rights had been planted, but it would take nearly 100 years for it to start prospering. However, women were changing; they were changing their opportunities in their family, their work life, and society along with them.…

On August 26, 1920, the right to vote was finally granted to women in the US by the United States Congress, marking the end of over half a century’s worth of campaigns and rallies and protests over the woes of the women, and the beginning of a new era. And yet, Waldo will still not be found. From the omnipresent and ever widening gender pay gap to the disproportionately huge number of women who experience gender violence (not to mention the alarming number of unreported cases of the same) to needs and wants arising out of poverty (and abundance), inequalities remain.…

Gender roles have changed with the times; women have worked to strip themselves of the house wife ideal too become independent working women. Though the way we see women now didn’t just happen overnight, it came from years and years of challenging gender ideals. That’s why to truly understand genders roles of women in modern day society we have to go back into the past and examine what really shaped gender and how we have come to see gender today. To answer those questions, we will look back at hunter gatherer and Native American society’s all the way through to World War I and the Cold war.…

Women, in their relentless pursuit of gender equality, have evolved from the early modern period to the postmodern world. Throughout most of history, women had fewer legal rights and career opportunities than men did. Women mostly had jobs as a seamstress or kept boarding houses, some of the women had the same jobs as men. For an example, according to “Women’s History in America” in 1890 a slim amount of the women were doctors, but 95% of doctors were men in the United States. Another example of what women were not allowed to do is vote, married women were not allowed to obtain property rights, if a couple happen to get a divorce woman had no parental rights, and women had to obey laws even though they had no say in the law in the first place. This is just a few of the many unequal things that happened to women. It is a turning point in women’s history…
