Gender In Trifles

play “Trifles,” by Susan Glaspell, the story takes place at the home of Mr. Wright a man who was murdered. Two man accompanied by two women visit the murder scene. Both genders are able to see the murder scene in different aspects. The women are able to notice things in the house that the men are not. This causes the men to not really see what happened to the murder victim. The main theme on “Trifles” is how different women and men can be. During the play it shows how both genders can be in the same place, looking at the same thing but will formulate two completely different opinions about it. Right from the beginning the women are able to see there is something really wrong. “Oh her fruit; it did freeze, she worried about that when it turned so cold. She said the fire’d go out and her jars would break” (75-76).
Mrs. Wright was all alone in that farm with her crazy and abusive husband. She no longer cared, she had stop taking care of her farm and her house. She was bored of the loneliness and had enough of the mistreatments. The abuse had affected her so much that saw no other way but to murder her abusive husband. The women feel guilty and bad for not been able to aid Mrs. Wright. “I might have known she needed help”! I know how things can be-for women” (301). This to me says she might be going through something similar just like Mrs. Wright.
One of the literary elements in “Trifles” is irony. During the investigation of Mr. Wright’s murder all the men are doing is patronizing Mrs. Wright’s home. Criticizing how awful of a house keeper she is. They are even ridiculing the women who are accompanying them “Ah, loyal to your sex I see” (91). Again, they are completely missing the point and what they are there to investigate in the first place. Ironically they are not paying attention to the details and on why Mrs. Wright’s home has not been well taken care of. They are not listening to what the other women are saying
