Sexism has haunted women candidates since Victoria Woodhull ran for president on the Equal
Rights Party ticket in 1872. In 2008 presidential election, both Clinton and Palin clearly show that they were also victims of prevalent sexism in Politics in the USA. There is very a skewed gender representation in US politics.
Since 1789, only 2 percent of members of Congress have been women. In the Senate from
1922-2006 only 33 women have served in the Senate: 20 Democrats and 13 Republicans.
Between 1917 and 2008, a total of 246 women have served in Congress, 158 Democrats and 88
Republicans. Of these women, 211 have served only in the House, 28 only in the Senate, and seven in both houses.
