Boys Vs. Girls: The Gender Roles “Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short and wear shirts and boots because it's okay to be a boy; for girls it's like promotion. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, according to you, because secretly you believe that being a girl is degrading.” (McEwan,1978), Gender roles are the roles that each gender gets that shows people how they are supposed to act. Gender roles have been planted in the heads of humans since the beginning of time. The article “Boys and Girls, Constrained by Toys and Costumes” written by Claire Cain Miller on NY TIMES which came out October 15, 2015 talks about the gender roles planted in the heads of little kids. Ever since people where kids, parents have told them that it is not okay for girls to have wallets and it is not okay for boys to wear dresses. If someone was to break these roles, then they are looked down and called names. It also talks about how there are certain colors and certain toys for each gender. The article also mentions that there have been a lot of experiment and one of them talks about how boys and girls believed that certain genders should do certain jobs, like women should be nurses and men should be doctors. (Miller 2015) “A web search for Halloween costumes of scientists produces only boys wearing lab coats and goggles. A search for nursing costumes turns up girls in skirts with stethoscopes. Cats and cupcakes are also girls, while sharks and astronauts are boys.” (Miller,2015). The article talks about how people will only look for costumes that fits the kids gender and will not the kids be the other genders
