Genealogy Family History
If you have had limited or no exposure to genealogy and family history, the most difficult part of getting started is often knowing how and where to begin. Searching and documenting your family roots can be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever engage in... and frankly it can be quite addictive. Like most worthwhile activities, genealogy and family history require a modest level of commitment and dedication and a fair amount of patience. Here are a few ideas to get you started on the fast track.

1. Designate and set aside some specific time to work on your genealogy each week and then stick to your schedule. Begin modestly so that you don't get frustrated and quit. Be consistent. Even if you are able to set aside just an hour

Next, call on relatives and friends of the family who either have records, photos, documents, etc. or who have firsthand knowledge of specific ancestors. Explain what you are doing and ask if they would allow you to make copies of photos, papers, documents, letters, and other family records. Make sure you are extremely careful about returning originals in the same condition in which they were received. In cases where records are not available but personal relationships existed, ask if you could schedule a brief interview to gather information about either the ancestor or a deceased relative. Most people will be gracious and obliging, particularly if you agree in advance to limit the visit to a reasonable length of time. Be courteous and stick to your time commitments. It is not unreasonable to request to either record or video tape the conversation in order to preserve the information. You may also just come with a notepad and pen. You will be looking for any and all information that may shed light on the character, life, accomplishments, family culture, etc. of your ancestry. But you will also be interested in gathering as much specific information such as birth dates and places, death dates and places, burial places, baptismal and other church records, marriage dates and places, etc. as you possibly can. This is the information that will be most useful in documenting your family heritage and history.

4. As you gather information you should begin to organize it and label

Maud Newton’s “America’s Ancestry Craze” discusses genealogy and how it is used to find out information about your ancestors. Newton shares her experience while having access to centuries of public records online and how discovering some of these records, should be done with caution. The idea of someone using these online websites, to find out who they are as a person, is only some of the many ideas newton goes over in her essay. Newton also goes into much detail on genes and how they, including details of her ancestors, are used to make up a person. The fascination people have for DNA analysis is strongly encouraging more people to put together their family tree. The only true way Newton believes we can find out who we are as a person, is…

A prominent family in American political history I would explore with my students to get them excited about researching their own genealogies is the genealogies of the Kennedy family. When researching the Kennedy’s genealogy, a resource I would use in my classroom is abcnews.com where all the information about the Kennedy’s family history is easily assessable and available for free. This interactive website provides the Kennedy family tree which begins with the first generation of Kennedys, Joseph Patrick Kennedy and Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald. This website allows you to continue researching about this family by showing four generations of Kennedy’s. By clicking on the second-generation tab you are able to see all the children Joseph and Rose had and who they married. Once you click on a certain child like John Kennedy you can see his wife Jacqueline and their children and whom they married in the third generation tab and finally in the fourth generation tab you are able to see what would be Johns and Jacqueline’s grandchildren. This website allows you to go back at any time and look at the different aspect of the family tree by going back to any generation and clicking on a different child. This shows the students how large and complex genealogies can be. This website will get the students interested in genealogy and get them to make connections to people they already know. For example, I would go back to the second-generation tab and change John Kennedy to Eunice Kennedy…

Thankfully, my paternal ancestry is much more detailed. My grandmother has Alzheimer's disease and cannot remember anything, but, thankfully, her husband has studied his own son’s genealogy before so he knows both sides of the story. My grandfather’s parents are Ralph Douglas Bratton, and Lucille Norman Bratton. I can trace their genealogy back to 1720 with my great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather John Bratton, who was born in Scotland. The majority of his ancestors were farmer, who were migrating from Scotland to Randolph, North Carolina to Ida, Arkansas, and finally they settled in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Some of the most memorable people in that line were my my great-great-great-great grandfather Benjamin “Uncle Cuff” Bratton,…

Interestingly, there is NO exact definition for family heritage. I think it is one’s identity according to their family tree. A family tree is a chart that traces the ancestors and descendants of a family throughout history and identifies the relationship of one family member to another. Family heritage differs from culture to culture, and country to country. In Africa, for example, symbolic gestures, masks, costumes, and body paintings are used as a form of communication, while Asian cultures are foreign to that form of art.…

My grandparents from my mother’s side of the family were both born in China and resided in a small town their entire life. My grandmother—Po Po, goes by the name of Ling Tan; and my grandfather—Gung Gung, is called Chau Yi Chen. Both of them lived in the same village and were tied together through arrange marriage which is a very popular tradition in China. Due to China’s one child policy, my grandfather grew up with no siblings because it was illegal to give birth to more than one child. Unless the family is within the minority and falls under certain circumstances, the family would be fined heavily if they give birth to addition children. Grandfather Chau Yi worked as a farmer to help support his family; and Grandmother Ling was born in a middle class family and had an older brother—Tim Chi Tan. Being a middle class family had given her family the ability to pay off their fine for having a second child. Granduncle Tim Chi left home in 1958 hoping for a better future in life, but he has never returned home ever since—neither did he contact the family. Therefore, I do not have much info about him and my mother would forbid me asking. Nevertheless, my grandmother grew up helping her parents in a small Chinese restaurant until she married my grandfather. After my grandparents were married for two years, they gave birth to my mother named Yan Ru Chen and a younger brother named Chang Yi Chen. Uncle Chang Yi worked at a restaurant as a waiter during daytime and a delivers newspaper early in the morning. Uncle Chang Yi left home in 1984 in attempts to seek a better life by swimming across the border to Hong Kong. Unfortunately, he failed his first attempt and was deported back home. Knowing that the opportunities in China are very limited, my grandmother cannot stand seeing her son’s potential to succeed trample in waste. She exhausted her savings to payoff generals for my uncle to reach Hong Kong safely—undocumented.…
