The story” The lady and The Tiger?” written by Frank Stockton mainly talk about a princess who falls in love with a low station man, but under the king’s barbaric control, the young man was considered a criminal. So the king gave the young man a chance to choose: the tiger or the lady. It also means dead or live with another woman. The story didn’t give us an exact ending. In my opinion, the story is combined with generosity and selfish. In this story, generosity can also be selfish. Sometimes, a choice looks generous on the surface, actually it was selfish on the inside. There are many examples to prove this.
Firstly, we can talk about the king. It seems that the idea of choice between a lady or a tiger is more kind than kill the prisoner immediately. At least the criminal can have a chance to choose. Live happily or dead. “ This vast amphitheatre …… was an agent of poetic justice, in which crime was punished, or virtue rewarded”(230). It looks just and generous but in fact it is cruel for the person choosing the door of tiger. Also, the king is barbaric and selfish. Just to show his power, he ignored his daughter’s happiness and pushed his daughter and the young man into a really hard situation. Both choices were cruel for the princess and the young man. The story always says this idea is just and fair, but actually it is cruel and barbaric. The king appears generous in giving the prisoner a chance to live, but actually he is barbaric and selfish.
There are two choices for the princess. The first one is to let the man die in the tiger’s mouth. This decision seems cruel. She guided the young man towards death because she didn’t want the young man to marry another woman. “ She hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind that silent door”(234). From that, we can infer that the princess was jealous of the lady. She hated that the woman could easily get her lover. At that point, the princess
