From the day Vincent was born, he had always been concidered as highly flawed, and as an 'invalid'. His parents were planning on carrying on the family name with their first born child by calling Vincent, Anton, after his father, Antonio. However, once finding out that Vincent was prone to illness' such as neurological disorder, manic depression, attention deficit disorder, heart failure, and was expected to live for only 30.2 years, Vincent's father felt that he wasn't worthy of the family name, and decided to call him Vincent Anton instead. Mother and Father, Maria and Antonio had a second child, who Antonio felt was worthy of the family name, because unlike Vincent who was conceived the natural way, Anton was born through genetic engineering. As the two boys grew up, Anton was always considered superior to Vincent as he was always upstaging him at everything they did. Until one day, when the two boys played a game of chicken. Like usual, Anton was expecting Vincent to turn around and swim back to shore. However, no matter how much effort he put into trying to beat his brother, Anton and Vincent were neck and neck the whole swim. Anton was confused at how Vincent still had the energy to swim, and finally Anton wasn't able to go on any longer and he gave up. Passing out and starting to drown, Vincent saved his brother's life. For the first time in their lives, Vincent was better than Anton at something. Even though everybody believed that he wasn't good enough to acheive his goals, Vincent now believed that he could achieve anything that he set his mind to. Vincent decided to run away from home and he got a job as a janitor at Gattaca. This was his first glimpse of Gattaca, and he liked what he saw.…

Vincent Freeman is cast into society's redundant section as being an "invalid", however he overcomes this burden of uselessness, and uses his strong will to drive him forward to achieving his dream of flying to Titan. Vincent is an "invalid" who suffers under the burden of being a "utero" as he is unable to make any progress in his life due to his imperfect genetic make-up. From a young age, he is outcast from society, even by his own father and brother as being different. Antonio explains to Vincent, "...the only way you'll see the inside of a spaceship is if you're cleaning it." Vincent agrees as in this society, it didn't matter how many times you lied on your resume because "your real resume was in your cells." He is denied his opportunity of fulfilling his dream of flying to space from a young age and discouraged to pursue his dream. However, this only strengthens Vincent, and as he "resorts to more extreme methods" by "borrowing" the identity of Jerome Morrow, he overcomes the sacrifices and hardships by concentrating on the glory of achieving his dream and in his own mind, proving everyone else wrong. Vincent clearly "exceeds his potential" as he overcomes the imprisonment of his genes, and forges himself a worthy life.…

Gattaca is a very interesting film that sheds light on the possible future of humanity, when it comes to genetic manipulation. The entire plot of the film revolves around a society that is primarily centered on the need for superior genes. Every child in the film, apart from the protagonist, Vincent Freeman, is born in the eugenics program. This program is purposely structured to manipulate the genetic composition of children to guarantee that they only inherit a specific set of desirable traits from their parents. The film portrays the struggles that Freeman is forced to endure as he attempts his dreams of exploring space in a highly discriminative society where only the genetically perfect human beings survive. It represents the extremes…

Only in Miami can you see a Cuban family-run restaurant serving Italian pizza while playing a style of music that originated in Africa. Every day we experience the foods, music, and traditions of many different cultures. Almost no family shares the same cultural blend as another. My family is no exception to this trend. My mom was born and raised in Florida however; her father has descendants from England. My paternal grandmother’s family came from France, but the war kept sending them back and forth between Spain and France. My grandmother is the only one of her siblings born in Spain. I also have German and Venezuelan roots. I think of it all as the ingredients in the dish Chicken Chop; the most prominent ingredients in this “Cultural Dish” are the English and Hispanic cultures. These are the elements, sprinkled with some cosmopolitan influential flare, that have influenced my personal culture over the years.…
