Abused, bullied and made fun of, yet George Orwell still ended up doing something amazing with his life. He was born in India in 1903, into a time of political upheaval. There were many wars and political movements going on at the time. For example; the Russian Revolution and the quest for a Utopian society. He was born into the lower middle-class, so even while looking for a job he was still looked down upon. When he found a job with the Indian Imperial Police Force, he had to do things he did not want to do, so he resigned. His family was considered lower middle-class, and that wasn't accepted at his privileged school. He was teased and looked down upon because he was not from a wealthy family. He grew up in a time of impoverished snobbery. This experience made him sensitive to the cruelty of social snobbery. (2) Many of the kids would laugh and make fun of him and his intellectual brilliance. (Ranald 234). He loved reading at an early age, especially science fiction and ghost stories. These books and a rough childhood inspired future writings. He ended up being very well educated, attending two private schools, Wellington and Eton. He wanted to go into writing before college but he decided to join the Imperial Police. From 1922 to 1927, Orwell was employed by the Indian Imperial Police. Stationed in Burma, his class-consciousness intensified as he served as one of the hated policeman enforcing British control of the native population. (Ranald 234) After he resigned from his position, he started writing about his time as a policeman and why he wanted to quit. Guilty from his role as imperialist, he lived amongst the poor in London and Paris for quite some time.
