Geraldo Short Story Summary
The story my team and I read and made a film out of was “Geraldo”. The story “Geraldo” is about

how this girl Marin falls in love with geraldo who she met at the dance. Marin and Geraldo spend all

night at the dance, they dance to everything, such as, cumbias, salsa, and rancheras. Little does

Marin know that this would be the last night she would hear and see Geraldo. After coming out of

the dance Geraldo gets hit by a car that Marin witnesses. After getting hit by a car Marin spent

hours and hours in the emergency room with Geraldo. After Geraldo loosing so much blood

he dies.The theme of this story teaches us that when you mess around a lot when you go out

negative consequences will come your way.

    In the short story “A&P,” John Updike writes of a nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who is overcome by his fantasies when three girls walk into the A&P grocery store. They are in nothing but bathing suits. He soon decides, after the events that occur, because of these three girls, to quit working in the third slot of the grocery store. The three girls to Sammy are damsels in distress, because of Lengel, the manager. Out of the three girls, one catches his eye, the one he calls “Queenie” (Updike 85). She soon becomes the center of his focus, from the details of her swimsuit to the color of her hair. He and his coworkers cannot seem to take their eyes off these girls throughout the entire store. This all changes when the girls go to the meat counter, where they meet McMahon. He is much older in age and the way he lusts after these young girls makes Sammy uneasy. Sammy, seeing the older man “slavering” over the girls, shows him that he does not want to be ‘that guy’. He shifts his feelings from corrupt to protective. He goes into more of a heroic mode so to speak. This is in his mind is what made him decide to quit his job, but why? After seeing the actions of McMahon, Sammy is shocked knowing he also was acting the same way. It brought to his attention how his actions cause an effect in many ways. When he quit he must explain his actions to his family, accepting responsibility for what he has done. Sammy must also decide how he wishes to perceive and interact with women in the future. In this story, Sammy goes from being an immature boy to a more mature man.…

The movie that is the next most powerful story I know is called “The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale.” Most of you probably have seen it before, if not you probably remember Fantasia Barrino whom was the winner of American Idol: Season 3. When Fantasia Barrino was in high school she was raped, she felt so alone after the attack and thought no one would believe her so she dropped out of school. Now Fantasia was a teenage dropout who had no money, no education and no chance at a real future. At 16, Fantasia found herself in an abusive relationship that left her pregnant and lost. But she refused to give up on her dreams. This movie tells how this inspiring young single mom used her incredible voice to become an American Idol, as well as a Grammy®-nominated, platinum-selling recording artist. This movie was very emotional because when the movie got towards the middle I was crying my eyes out. This movie has made Fantasia Barrino my idol and it had a really huge impact on me because my story is similar to hers so I can relate. The author of this movie had an effect of her audience by the way the movie was interesting from beginning to the end. Another way is because this movie is very encouraging to young women and even some men too. In my narrative next week I would like to write about never giving up on your dreams.…

    Courageous and full of determination, Jake Garson in one of the short stories I’m Still Here, written by Veronica Ross, shows the set of characteristics that many Canadians regard as expressing their unique place and role in the world. He tried to fight and stand up for his own rights against the government through his act of bravery. By doing this, he had influenced many people in his hometown that faced the same situation as Jake; however, they did not show the same kind of courage that Jake showed. Readers who like to reevaluate and rethink what they are reading are recommended to read short stories such as I’m Still Here. It is one of the stories that teach us the moral lessons of standing up for yourself without anger or violence and to have a positive attitude at all times. This is one of the effects it had made to the short story. Some other effects also include a slow beginning introduction with an unpredictable ending. The author also does an excellent job of capturing the reader’s interest through plots twists, characters, theme, symbolism and much more, which made an effective short story. Although the use of vulgar language had made an unattractive impression, it showed the characteristics and emotions of the character inside the story, which made it more alive for the readers to read. Kezia, the main character from the short story The Wedding Gift, written by Thomas Raddall had a similar situation like Jake.
