Chapter One, Surrounded by Enemies: The Apache way of life and Geronimo as a young…
Geronimo (Chiricahua: “one who yawns”; often spelled Goyathlay or Goyahkla in English) was a prominent Native American leader of the Chiricahua Apache who defended his people against the encroachment of the US on their tribal lands for over 25 years. While Geronimo said he was never actually a chief, he was rather a military leader. As a Chiricahua Apache, this meant he was also a spiritual leader. He consistently urged raids and war upon many Mexican and later U.S. groups. Geronimo eventually went on to marry 6 wives, an Apache tradition. He staged what was to be the last great Native American uprising, and eventually moved to a reservation often giving permissions to appear at fairs and schools.…
He was so daring in his feats that the Mexicans singled him out with the sobriquet Geronimo (Spanish for “Jerome”). The Mexicans believed that he had some kind of supernatural beings always with him. They believed in a spirit, or supernatural being that reputed invulnerability to bullets. Geronimo was the leader of the last American Indian fighting force to capitulate to the United States. He was known to fight against what most “normal” people would perceive to be the most daunting odds.…
GOYAHKLA A NATIVE AMERICAN LEGEND: GERONIMO A NATIVE AMERICAN SELLOUT WILLIAM MARTIN HISTORY 223 AMERICAN PUBLIC UNIVERSITY SYSTEM REBECCA BUTLER 15 MAR 2015 GOYAHKLA A NATIVE AMERICAN LEGEND: GERONIMO A NATIVE AMERICAN SELLOUT An age old question is whether or not Geronimo was a legend or a sellout. Geronimo was an Eastern Chiricahua Apache from present day Arizona and New Mexico. After the murder of his mother, his wife, and his children in 1850 by the Mexican soldiers his name and the ways he fought were developed.…
The video we watch regarding the veterans from 761st really sparks a lot of questions within me. I never quite understood why African Americans fought to defend a country that was not their native land. Nor could I figure out why they would want to defend the same people who enslaved them and ignored them even after they helped them win the war. However the video was really insightful because it allowed me to see that we truly are the reason America is so great and without us it would have crumpled. This video shows that if we wanted to make this black america because we have put more into this society than the white man ever could. It was very sad to see that even though those African American males were the reason they won the battle, they still did not get credit until years later.…
This study was inspired by the literary elements in the book Prietita y la llorana. The book used to be passed down orally through generations, until it was published. It demonstrated how literacy was taught and passed on in their culture. Schools in South Texas believe their Mexican-American youth are not at the same literacy level as the rest of the children. However, the Family Institute for Early Literacy (FIELD) used this book to begin a study to see if these children are in fact literate when they begin school, they just aren't aligned with the current standards of teaching. Their goal was to discover the methods that these parents used to teach their children literacy.…
The Apache didn’t go down without a fight. One of the most famous and fearsome warriors of the Apache is none other than Geronimo. Geronimo first fought against the newly established Mexican settlers (after they claimed their independence from Spain), and then later the new comers from the United States. Geronimo’s defeat ended the Apache hostilities and their way of life. Geronimo and his warrior band were sent to Fort Sill where he died in 1909. After the death of Geronimo things started to change on the reservation. All of the Apache children were taken unwillingly from their families and sent to boarding schools where they were given new names and learned English. At that point in time the Apache lost their way of life…

1. The core issue at stake in this chapter is the farewell address. Washington would be the head of the new government. Washington proved himself to be a capable even great president helping to shape the new government and lead the country through any crisis both foreign, and domestic. Washington did not believe in political parties. As the political parties started forming during his administration he didn't want American people to debate and resolve public issues. It was his fear of what these parties would do to the nation. This is what led Washington to the farewell address.…
In the 1900s, racism and segregation were major issues for African Americans who were living in South. These people were not treated as equals to the white people. The play Fences and the memoir Black Boy exhibit the neglect, caused by the absence and loss of a parent for African Americans, because of a time of racial segregation presiding in the 1900s. In addition towards this, African Americans suffered numerous hardships, prejudice, and discrimination. These were all compounds to the effects of segregation.…
Geronimo was a brave and courageous man. Even though he had a hard life he fought through it. He was strong and learned to pray. For example Geronimo was captured and he said “Do what you want to do with me”(history documentary.com). “With the help of his tribe Geronimo escaped the reservation three times successfully”(history documentary.com). He was brave enough to escape the reservation by escaping at night and entering Mexico and again captured but that did not stop him so he did it again and again.…
Geronimo was caught and put on a reservation when four years later he escaped and went out on his own again with a small group of some of his followers. For the next five years Geronimo and his group fought what is known as the last of the Indian wars against the United States. The Native people have very strong beliefs and customs and will fight for the land and fight for what they believe in. Geronimo is a prime example of how much Native Americans would do to protect the land and what he would do for…
