The focus of the therapy is on what is transpiring throughout the process more so than the actual content. The emphasis is place on the here and now also, focus on the verbal and nonverbal cues that the client gives the individual needs to become aware that they have choices in life. The gestalt theory suggests there are five layers of neurosis that can interfere with an individual.
Phony layer -pretend to be something you 're not.
Phobic layer - an attempt to avoid recognizing aspects of yourself afraid of rejection.
The Impasse layer - has no sense of direction feeling helpless and full of dread.
The implosive and explosive layers feel wearable to feelings as they peel back the layers of defensiveness built up over the years. When the client gets to this last layer, they can start to become their true selves. The gestalts goal is to help the client resolve their past so they can continue to live and mature as intended.
